I have tried sleeping 7 up to 10 hours a night. I wake up exhausted. Caffeine is a trigger for me. Any suggestions on how to wake up? Only some exercise? Anything else?

Hi finalpoet,

I had the same problem as you I could sleep for hrs. but in the morning I woke up feeling exhausted like I didn't get any sleep. My neuro at the time did a sleep study on me along with a e.e.g. and e.k.g and found out I was having seizures in my sleep 1-2 hrs.
before I woke up each day she then put me on vimpat and those seizures stopped. Maybe you should have a sleep study done to see if you have the same problem as I did or maybe you have a sleep disorder.
I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue

I agree that a sleep study may be in order. Also, speak about this with your neuro and explain how this is affecting your life, particularly while still in school. You did not mention what meds you are taking, but most of them cause fatigue.

I'm sure many here can attest that sometimes the wrong combination of meds or a doc who has prescribed too high a dose than is necessary can lead to excess fatigue. Some fatigue with AEDs is to be expected but if it is severe, then again talk to your neuro and get that sleep study.

I actually think it's my Vimpat that is causing my fatigue. I'm sorry I was unclear. I realized about a week ago, that I wake up fine usually, but I take my meds soon after waking up and I'm fine till I take my meds. And about 20-30 minutes after I take my meds I am then facing back asleep. So I believe it's my meds. Probably the recent increase in my Vimpat. But I will keep a sleep study in the back of my mind.

My opinion would be that if you take the drug for awhile now and it seems to "knock you out" then either your dosage is too high or it is not the drug for you. Like I said, some fatigue is normal, but not being able to stay awake is not the way to go through life. You should definitely discuss this with the neuro and let them know how much it affects you.

That said, I can tell you that when I began taking Keppra, the very first time (and only one pill) it knocked me out for awhile. It took time for my body to adjust and eventually I was up to four pills a day. I did feel mentally slower during that time, but after six months my body adjusted more, and I didn't feel so lethargic. So, depending on how long you've been taking it, you may just need an adjustment period.
