I have something that troubles me a bit and wondered if anyone can shed any light on this. My daughter was diagnosed with idiopathic generalised epilepsy via EEG five years ago when she was 11. What bothers me is that I took Prozac in the very early stages of pregnancy. Her older brother wasn't very old, I'd had PND and we weren't planning another baby at that point. I stopped taking it as soon as I realised I was pregnant. I know there hasn't really been any research done on the use of anti-depressants during pregnancy (for obvious reasons) but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this. Thanks.

In my honest opinion, I don't believe they are related. However there is not a lot of research into it. All Prozac does is increase the levels of seratonin in the body, and that doesn't point to causing any seizure-related problems for the most part. There is one possibility I'm aware of, however it's not likely considering it didn't show up until she was 11.

If you had taken them the entire time, it might suggest NAS. http://www.mothersmatter.co.nz/Medications/Neonatal-Adaptation-Syndrome.asp
However that is typically only in the first 3 - 5 days after birth, then it goes away. It has to do with how the baby adapts from being in the womb to being outside of the womb.
It is usually short lived with a median duration of 3 days, and 75 % complete resolution by 5 days (3). However there have been reports of adaptation signs lasting up to 4 weeks.
I wouldn't dwell on it though, the likelyhood of your Prozac being the cause seems quite low, especially since you stopped it as soon as you found out you were pregnant. :)

Thanks for that Silat. When I've tried to have a look on the internet, I've only come up with newborns having seizures if their mum has been taking ADs in the later stages. I do try not to think about it but I'm a little curious. Thanks for replying x

A friend of mine did the same thing, took Prozac in the early stages of her pregnancy. She actually has mixed up her thyroid medicine with the Prozac. But there were no adverse consequences for her son (he's now a very healthy 10-year old).
