I saw my neurologist yesterday and he's confirmed epilepsy. I will have an MRI after baby is born. He said that it's developed into a much clearer case of epilepsy than it was before so he's put me on lamotrigine.

He was very interested in the fact that when I see and hear weird things, it's always on my right hand side. When he asked if I was right or left handed I said "mainly right", he then said "that's what I wanted to hear" - because I really don't feel I have a dominant hand. I write VERY messily with both hands, but most comfortable with my right because that's how I was taught. I wonder if there's something in my brain that links epilepsy with my lack of dominant hand?

He asked when my last seisure was and I said "Tuesday, I wrote it down" then he asked what time of day and I honestly didn't know. I said I'm not sure except that it was between 7am-6pm because my husband wasn't home and it was school holidays. He was really interested in the fact that I couldn't remember what time of day. I got quite confused and he said "it's OK, that's what I want to hear" so I'm guessing the confusion is related.

I had another EEG right then and there (argh! Getting that gel out of my dreadlocks isn't fun!) and I suspect they saw something because every other one I have had they said "right all clear, but that doesn't mean there's no seisure activity". This time I asked if it showed anything and she said "we have to wait for the dr to interpret it."

So I just biked the kid down to school and then to get my pills from the pharmacy. Not sure how long I can keep biking, at 20 weeks pregnant and very tired from seisures but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.

Hey Plingie, welcome to the club! Now we can teach you the secret handshake... :)

You may want to ask your neuro and your OB/GYN about monitoring Lamotrigine levels during the pregnancy and after the big day. (Congrats, BTW!). When estrogen increases or spikes (as it does during pregnancy), it speeds up the clearance of Lamotrigine from your system. This means that for some people, the Lamotrigine dose needs to be higher than usual during the pregnancy and then gets reduced after delivery. Also -- I'm sure you're already doing this -- but make sure you're getting plenty of folic acid with your pre-natal vitamins...

Your neuro may have asked about handedness since seizure activity that is localized on one side of the brain tends to affect the opposite side of the body. So maybe your EEG was showing abnormal brainwaves in your left brain.

My sympathies on the EEG gel. I have an EEG scheduled this month. I'm not looking forward to having to stay up all night beforehand and being a "gel-head" afterwards...

Thanks so much for a really, really helpful post!

Neuro is aware of my pregnancy, and my midwife has put me on a high dose of folic acid right form the get-go beacuse I had a history of seisures (even though I wasn't yet diagnosed)

Interesting about dosage changes with estrogen changes. I'm very sensitive to estrogen - the contraceptive pill wreaks havoc on me and the hormonal changes around pregnancy birth aren't flash for my depression, historically anyway.

I have got the EEG gel out, but the adhesive on my earlobes is really annoying and hard to get off! LOL. I said to my husband yesterday "I bussed home with lube in my hair and adhesive on my forehead and ears. Yet I STILL wasn't the weirdest person on the bus!"
