Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you achived seizure controll but decided not to sustain it due to side effects?

I finnaly achived full controll in a wierd combo of medications.

I only take 250mg of keppra a day and 250 mg of zarontine.

The thing is that even after 2.5 years of therapy with keppra the side effects of tiredness and the will or should I say unwill to do anything is still present.

everytime while driving in a car I would fall asleep, and also while using my brain for any task and in general I would really want to fall asleep in the afternoon.after adding the zarontine, the side effects din't increase much but it's hard for me to wake up now in the morning. I know that most of the controll and also the side effects come from the keppra but without it zarontine doesn't do much, it's like the 1% that made me fully controlled at last after so much time and yet I just decided to give up on being stebilized since my spirit is broken. I don't train for almsot 9 months and I used to push myself even tho I din't want to, I can't wake up on time, and for 1.5 years I barely read any books at all especially if it was for pure enjoyment.

My seizures are only myoclonic ones and yet other options have failed, I'm only left to try Klonopin or Zonegran but pretty sure it won't work as keppra since topamax din't fully work and gave me tons of side effects which I still suffer from altho I stopped it more than 6 months ago.

I know the dosages seem funny and small and yet I'm very sensetive and very hard to controll, Infact 1000mg of keppra a day din't do the trick like this combo does and only made me extremley tired. My diagnozise was myoclonic reflex epilepsy with medication sensetivity and resistance since alot of known medications for myoclonus don't work and almost always cause side effects.

My goal was having driver license at first but now I feel that I haven't lived at all in those past 2.5 years since starting keppra

What would you do in my position? Would you quit and even give up on treatment at all, would you be partially controlled if possible, would you stay on the same treatment although the side effects are present and would probably stay forever?

Thank you in advanced for any reply

Kostareyna, I understand where you're coming from. I'm taking 400mg daily Lamictal and i'm sick of feeling unwell, dizzy, foggy and tired! I don't know if its the meds, the epilepsy or both but i'm starting to wonder if seizures were better, I still have them anyway! I'm going in for an EEG so I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens then....

Can you ask your neuro about lowering your dose slightly? Do you have full seizure control at the moment? Excuse my ignorance but I assume there is more to myoclonic epilepsy than just the jerking? Can you tell me how it affects you? I'm curious =)

Well, I do have full seizure controll at the moment, 250mg a day is already 4 times less then the minimum recommended daily dosage, also in 125mg a day I would still get the urge to fall asleep and at this dosage I'm not stable anymore. As for the myoclonic epilepsy, my epiliptologist just putted a more precised name for my condition although in general I've been diagnosed with JME (Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy), the only difference is that unlike many others I don't have grandmals, at least not yet and it has been 10 years since my first time which was a violent myoclonic seizure without the loss of consciousness and because I was so aware I started to cry for not knowing what was happening with me.

I do have another exception like no other which I never heard or read about when it comes to jme, I feel fear in separation or a nanosecond before the jerk itself and in the video eeg it was actually seen as a seizure even tho I din't jerk at all, it even had the same abnormal spike waves which are typical to juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

mine were somewhat under control under keprra.
but it wasnt an option from the side effects, i decided I would rather have seizures. than take that med. again

I'm in the same dilemma - seizure control with side effects or meds free with seizures. For the moment I am opting for seizure control with side effects.

My daughter seemed to have full seizure control on 150mg lamotrigine a day. She dropped by 25mg to try to get her concentration back. Her schoolwork has improved but her seizure control has slipped. Seems to be a dilemma for a lot of people.

I see from all the replies that it's not that quite easy to decide which way is the better one to choose from the two.
