Hello, my name is Christie.

I just moved to New York City from Brisbane, Australia with my husband. He works for an American company here in NYC, and they closed their Brisbane office and moved their staff back here. We've been here two weeks so far!

I've had epilepsy since I was 19 (I'm 25 now). My generalised seizures are controlled by medication, but I still suffer numerous partial seizures.

We're adopting a Basset Hound in one week, and I'm really looking forward to his company. I also have an anxiety disorder, and feel much better when I have a canine companion :) I would like to get our Basset Hound registered as a service dog in NYC, but I don't think that's possible, as he has not had any training. My old dog (Buffy, a Samoyed) was able to anticipate when I was about to have a seizure, and it was in fact Buffy that alerted my parents when I had my first tonic-clonic seizure. She passed away two years ago, and is now my little angel :)

I hope everyone is well!
Christie.

Hi Lepetitrouge,

Welcome to CWE.
I'm also an Aussie, I hope you & your husband enjoy your new home in America.
I don't have a dog myself but love dogs because they are such loyal companions.
My parents have a beautiful female Kelpie/labrador who usually knows when my Dad or I aren't well. My parents have told me there are times when I have been visiting them & their dog has gone & alerted them that I was having a partial seizure. Nobody taught her to alert them, she just did it herself.

There are some other members on here who have service dogs so they may be able to help you more.

Thanks for your reply :)

Where in Australia do you live?

I love Kelpies and Labradors - your parents' dog must be incredibly intelligent! I'm awe-struck by their six-sense. If I'm feeling low, I like to read those 'amazing dog stories' ;-)

Best wishes from New York!

I'm in NSW, not far from the NSW/Victoria border.
Yes, my parents dog is really intelligent & very loyal lol. She is really my Dads baby but whenever I visit them she follows me around & if she thinks I'm not well she will not leave my side.
