I'm starting to wonder if my epilepsy meds might not be working, or might not be effective. I went and saw the new Star Wars movie, and when I came home, I felt exhausted, so I was going to lie down on the couch for a little while, but I apparently had a seizure. The good news is that at least this time, when I came out of it, after a short time, I became completely lucid again and have been all day today (albeit with a headache for most of the day)
I had one last month, and I think I had one in September as well, so I'm starting to question the effectiveness of my seizure meds. Thankfully, I have an appointment next month with my neurologist, and I'm going to ask about possibly trying something new.

Has anyone here had any issues with lamotrigine?

I'm really sorry your having seizures monthly and I know it not any fun.
Have you talked to your neuro about how you feel?
That might be a good thing to do.

That's the idea, I will next month. And if he does have me go on a different medication, I am not going back to Keppra. I'd much rather stay the course than switch to that awful drug.

If you can get controlled by AEDs that's great. I'm refractory and always have been.
I've never gone more 4 1/2 month seizure free in my entire life.

I'm med resistant to lamotrigine and allergic to Lamictal

What do you mean? I thought both were effectively the same thing? I might be developing an immunity to it.

Whoops I am allergic to it.

And there is a slight difference between the generic and name brand.
Generics send my seizures through the roof.

I also am med resistant to quite a few drugs

Not all meds work for all folks. Plus, other factors could be involved in your increase in seizures, such as stress, lack of sleep, etc. The Star Wars movie itself could have brought on just enough excitement in your brain to induce a seizure. I tried lamictal once but it didn't do a thing to control my seizures, so we had to go on to something else. Your neurologist may need to add another AED or start you on another.

Read here for more info on stress & E:

I see, I didn't know that.

I'm not so much of a Star Wars fan that I'd get that excited about it :P
I was happy I finally got to see it, but not that happy. For once, my memory didn't get messed up, so I still remember everything from the movie. But yeah, I'll talk to my doctor about trying something else. But anything besides keppra.

Eggbertx I tried lamotrigine for about 5 months....I had to go off of it and switch to Vimpat....it was making me moody and weight gain..and giving me a shooting pain in my right side...everyone is different...so...you never know...I have been on Topamax for 13 years and have never had a problem. just now had to add another drug to my routine. Epilipsy sucks...I will never understand how one minute you can be living your life...and then bam....seizures.....

It could have been the movie or related events that sent you over the edge, or it could just have been a coincidence.

I don't want to make you paranoid, but a contributing factor could have been drinking a large caffeine and sugar laden soft drink.

I've been experiencing seizures on a monthly basis as well, since last August maybe.
I wish I knew why.....

Frequency has always varied, but these past few months...seems like there's a pattern

I didn't think my seizures had a monthly pattern because I usually have one once a week but since taking progesterone cream the past four weeks, the seizures have basically reduced to zero.
I did have one last week but when I looked at the point of the cycle and compared to other months, my seizures are always worse at that point of the cycle.

There are some good articles on Google scholar, particularly by Herzog (Sorry, I'm not allowed to post links).
