Hello everyone, I have kind of an odd question to ask, and its for the most part directed at those with TLE. Now I know theres things such as gelastic seizures which could be related but Im not sure this is the same thing. Has anyone had the feeling that they had the urge to laugh for no reason? Like you feel high or giggly or something? Its a very strange feeling and although Ive never been diagnosed with epilepsy its something Ive been researching and looking into for awhile. I also noticed I usually only get this feeling in the morning or its at least strongest in the morning. Ive had alot of symptoms that could be related to TLE and Im trying to determine if this is something else that could be associated with it although I am aware it could be a mental health issue.

Hi Tom,
A person that has gelastic seizures doe sometimes laugh or cry for no reason and that's because the seizure is coming from either the temporal lobe or the frontal lobe. There have been a couple of times when for no reason I would laugh for a couple of seconds for no reason and it would end.
According to my neuro. the right temporal lobe is where a person shows a lot of emotion so if this area of the brain is being affected a person may laugh or cry for no reason but often this will lead into a tonic clonic (grand mal) or atonic seizure.
Also a person who is having gelastic seizures will sometimes smack there lips during a seizure and I do this when I have a complex partial seizure.
What causes gelastic seizures is either a brain tumor, family genes of migraine headaches. or damage on the right and left temporal lobe along with the frontal lobe of the brain that's left lesions in the brain. I have bi lateral lesions on both sides of my brain which has caused this problem.
My advice to you is that you have your family Dr. refer you to see a neuro or Epileptologist to be sure you aren't having any seizures. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue

tom - have you ever seen a neurologist? It's never a good thing to try to do self-diagnosis based on information on the internet. Doing some research is one thing but it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have a particular condition based on reading too much, and reading too much into what you research. It's easy to over-apply things you experience and think they are part of some disorder.

See a neurologist if you haven't already to get the low-down on whether you have epilepsy or not if this is what you think is going on. If findings or tests were equivocal, or you would like a second opinion for other reasons, that is your right and you may want to ask to see an epileptologist.

What you're feeling might actually be a seizure. I know when I was small I almost always used to laugh when I had one. I was too young to understand epilepsy so we just called them "laughing spells".

I do agree with masterjen though. You'd be best advised to talk to a neurologist, it might even tell him/her something about your seizures that s/he didn't know.
