Headaches after seizure

I had seizure, probably, Thursday night. I'm used to having headaches after the few seizure's I have had. But never longer than a day or two. This time my headache hasn't calmed or diminished at all. Have any of you had a headache for a long while afterwards?

I've had long headaches post tonic-clonics. I've found that it helps to drink a lot of water, avoid activity and bright lights, and take aspirin as needed. If you've hit your head during a seizure, that can make things worse of course. If you start having any symptoms that might suggest a head injury, definitely go to an ER to get checked out.

The longest headache I had following a seizure lasted about 3 days, of course, it didn't help that I slammed my head into a metal support beam when I fell.

I talked to my neurologist about headaches I get after my complex partial seizures. He said they are migraines and are related to my seizures. But the next month I had a migraine that was not connected to a seizure- it lasted 4 days and I was on the edge of going to the E.R. for shots.
When I went again to my neurologist, he diagnosed me with migraine auras- and this is what I've been seeing for years now. The headaches started showing up a few months ago. But in college I would have a few headaches but would take 5 Tylenol. When I told my neuro this, he said "you're only making it worse. Taking that much doesn't mean you're getting more medicine. Too much won't help you."
So I went out and got some Excedrin Migraine and that helps- only disadvantage is that it upsets my stomach. So I only take one at a time.

Talk to your neuro about possible migraines- or post-seizure migraines which I think it called Epileptic Cephalgia.. but not totally sure.

Hi foreverdark, Just thought I would post a link about postictal headache. According to the link they can last for around 72 hrs.

Unlike preictal or ictal headaches, postictal headache (PIH) is common and can affect the patient's quality of life. It is most common with generalized tonic-clonic seizures, is also common with complex partial seizures, and is less common with simple partial seizures.

Yes I get post ictal headaches a lot. Mostly from the tension of a wretched neck, but sometimes just from the seizure itself being exhausting. I also get them occasionally from a complex partial. Like a sharp pain above my right eye brow sort of like its up and under the top of my eye socket. It hurts and its not really a headache, but that pain has caused one from it lasting so long.

I always described my post-ictal headaches as the worst possible hangover you can imagine. However, they rarely lasted more than a day.

If this one is different than those you have had in the past, please make sure you document it very well and talk to your Neuro at your next appointment. If it doesn't go away soon, contact him asap. Their 'may' be another cause, related or not.

Luckily, I have not had one of these for 6 years and counting. (fingers crossed).

Mine usually last for a day after a tc. Worse than that is when I throw up for hours afterwards though.

I'd rather have the headache.

YES!! Just like a hangover at times! I still have a headache, it has diminished some, but still there. Heck, it may just be sinus or stress. It was worst right over my right eye where my neuro said the EEG abnormality was, spreading over my whole head. Now it is all just a dull throb. I didn't hit my head or anything.
