Dr. Lin said " There is no tumor and it is not MS. You are having seizures, Epilepsy, but I will not officially give you that diagnosis yet. You have suddenly gone unconsious only one time, and you have to go unconsious 2 times or have events stop totally with medication to be diagnosed. In 5 days since the increase of the topamax, you have not had one event, so that is another criteria. But you have had 16 events in 8 weeks, one unconsious. and 3 in the last 2 weeks. . The test results are another, etc..etc.. We will see how you do until the next appointment in May. In the meantime, you are NOT allowed to drive a car for 3 months by Law, DMV. In fact, do NOT dirve until you see me again. And do NOT go swimming at all, for any reason. No other physical limitations."

He was caring and gentle.

Okay, well yippee that you don't have a tumor or MS!! But the bit about having to go unconsious 2 times or have events totally stop with medication is garbage in my opinion. I have never heard that! I am already sleeping when I have mine, have had abnormal EEg's and am intractable (unchanged with medication) and my doctor has said epilepsy from the get go. I am glad that he was caring and gentle, but you may need to see someone else.

:agree: with huskymom on the part of going unconscious two times to diagnose epilepsy is garbage. I've never heard of that either and I've had epilepsy now for 30+ years. What about those who have seizures in their sleep or have only SP seizures? But thankfully there is NO tumor or MS.

You may need another opinion. :ponder:

I'm so glad it's not MS or a tumour!
Sucks that you can't drive. But only 3 months? Wow! Where I live I have to be seizure free for 1 year before I can drive again.
I'm glad that he was gentle and caring too. It is strange that he is being so careful with your diagnosis. You can have epilepsy without ever being unconscious.
At least the meds are helping a bit, right?

Good news, and then a HUH? I agree here, I think you should seek out another opinion if its an option. Kaits Neuro had said that sometimes they wont make a diagnosis or start medication if there is only one instance of a seizure, that sometimes they wait until another seizure happens. However....he did say that sometimes they dont have to wait simply because there is enough evidence to support an epilepsy diagnosis.

I guess the good news here is that they have you on medication, and hopefully you can remain seizure free on it. :) Keep us posted.

im glad its not the other 2 but agree u dont need to have 2 unconscious seizures i didn't and was diagnosed fast maybe too fast but that's not right.

I agree with all of you and I am getting a second opinion. Acutally I am glad that he is not jumping too fast to diagnose me with Epilepsy. I do repspect that. Becauase once a person is diagnosed and you have that label...your life changes. I have seen this many times as an RN. I will post again when I get a second opinion. Thanks for all your support. :)
