Most of my seizures will be from a minute to 10 minutes.

A simple partial will last for just a minute or two.

Complex partial seizures and tonic-clonic (which I have maybe once a year) last on average last 3 to 5 minutes but they can be longer.

I have told my neuro about the 10 minute long seizures and he said that it was ok because I tend to have longer seizures in general. He told me that if I don't start to come out of the seizure with in 10 minutes to call 911 or go to the ER.

I was wondering how long your seizures last?

Me, simple partials are 1 to 2 minutes with 30 minutes to an hour after affects. My complex partials are... Not sure cause I slip away from this world, but when I do come back I am usually dealing with 2 hours +/- after affects. I don't have grand mal's much anymore but when they come about, the rest of my day is not so good. :ponder:

I must say though, that prior to June, in the last 5 years or so I did good with my drugs and rarely had a seizure; one or two in the year. Prior to 5 years back I was up and down after my surgery periods.

Valerie,

Epilepsy.com has a list of guidelines of when to call 911. They recommend calling after 5 minutes for Tonic Clonic seizures.

Thanks for the web-site.

These are things that we pretty much go by. The only thing that we hold back on are the partial/complex partials and that's only because my neuro said that I have longer seizures in general. Most usualy don't last longer more than 5 minutes. If they're a pretty bad one or if I have 2 right in a row 911 will get called.

I very rarely have TCs, and normaly 911 gets called no matter how long they last.

There is no reason to call 911, unless you have convulsions that last longer than 5 minutes, then it would be considered status epilepticus; which could be life threatening. I don't know about simple partial or complex partial seizures lasting that long, but if your neurologist knows little to nothing then you may want to ask for a referral to a better neurologist, who studied epilepsy (my neurologist did it for 2 years) or even an epileptologist. You may reduce your seizures or even completely eliminate them, if you went to an epileptologist. I don't mean to disrespect your neurologist, I bet he is a fine doctor. But, they have to keep up with many diseases and put an emphasis on other neurological disorders, rather than keep up with epilepsy. Usually they're smart, but still, an epileptologist specializes in epilepsy and they have a lot of experience dealing with difficult to control epilepsy. Of course, this is just my opinion and recommendation, it's your life so do whatever suits you. :)

If you're at a job, then you may want to educate your coworkers perhaps show them a youtube video. If you're having them out in public, then wear a bracelet that lists the medicines you take and that you have epilepsy. Usually paramedics will leave you alone, I know how expensive hospital bills can cost, so buying a bracelet or necklace for 15 dollars may be worth it. I mean, why call 911? It's not like going to the hospital can cure epilepsy, only if it last longer than 5 minutes then a hospital may need to inject you with medicine to stop long lasting seizures which could damage you. Perhaps if you hit your head or injure yourself some how then it may need emergency treatment.

I don't know how long my seizures last, usually I am out for like 4 minutes or so then confused for a good 30 minutes.

Hope this helps you. Just a reminder, I am not a doctor or anything, so I could be wrong. I am just trying my best to learn as much as possible about the disease, and help people. But, as I stated I am not a medical professional.

Longest on e ever was 30 minutes. It felt like that long anyways. It wasn't paralyzing though. Maybe 20 minutes. Very intense.
