As far as medical personnel are concerned, I think one factor to keep in mind is that unless we (ie. all person's with a seizure disorder) have some ID indicating we do have seizures, along with a wallet card indicating type of seizures and medication we're taking, that any medical person is going to treat it as a first seizure. So therefore yes, there will be medical intervention that might be unwarranted.

As for friends and family, the best solution as others have said is education regarding what to and when to call for medical assistance.

When it comes to strangers again education is important however there are ways to ensure that if people are nearby during the seizure that they will know how to keep you safe and when to call the ambulance. One very good way is to purchase one of those flat travel pouches that lie flat against your torso; your medical alert bracelet (more commonly looked for than a necklace apparently) can tell people to look for the pouch and in that would be a card with instructions.

I think they got scared and peoples first reaction is usually to call 911. I know the one I had at home with my neighbor, she said that my facial expression changed and she thought I was having a stroke. Luckily, I have never lost consciousness, just momentary confusion, disorientation...

Trying to Teach People

masterjen,
One thing that I have run into several times is a person's refusal to accept the fact that someone else may have different necessities to live a fruitful life than that person does. A person who refuses to accept this is going to have negative feelings about anybody who may do something differently out of necessity.
This type of person is going to be a basket case if anything ever happens to anybody who has an important standing in that person's life! This person is NOT going to be able to deal with the new happening, and their refusal to accept facts is going to destroy any relationship that they may have with the person who has changed out of necessity.:agree:
This is the type of person that my mother was. Nothing or nobody was ever correct but her!:ponder:

I am going to put something in my wallet that says "Do not take me to the E/R unless I am hurt and bleeding" people seem to go through your wallet regardless to find out who you are.

I was telling someone about my epilepsy once and they said but you look normal; and I said with out skipping a beat what am I suppose to look like? She didn't say a work when I said that to her.

My husband thought I was tossing and turning in bed. It was after all of it that he told me how irritated he was with me for repeatedly kicking off his covers and then smacking him in the head. I had not had a GM before this happened. It was after he got up to turn the light on for getting smacked in the head that he learned all of what happened was during the seizure. Who said that you didn't qualify for the insulin pump? The pump has no connection to seizures, soooo why wouldl they deny it??? It made a huge difference in my life. Our insurance through my husbands job changed this year for the first time in the 25 years we have been married. It just went from a deductible of $300 a year to $4000! I am so use to paying $100ish every three months. Now.....this $3000 up front I will have to pay for my pump supplies for 3 months is stressing me out big time. Just totally billionaire foreign business owner!

I've had this happen as well after having had a night of nocturnal seizures. I've been told "well you look fine" to those who see me or "you sound find" to those I'm on the phone with. This is a pet peeve I have!

People Misunderstanding E

This is a large problem with some people! They seem to think that if they can't see, hear or feel something, it doesn't exist. To them this means that there is no problem!
It is something that is very interesting when a person like this is made to realize that things CAN an DO happen to people that can't be seen, heard or felt by them(know-it-alls).
I have seen people who have felt this way go 'nuts' when they were put in a barometric chamber and the door closed. The air pressure in the chamber has slowly risen and these people just start screaming when their heads start feeling like they are going to burst.
When they get out of the chamber they can't believe that feeling was caused by something they had NO sight of, couldn't hear, but could definitely feel when the pressure got too high for them to bear, but no one outside the chamber sensed anything. All they could do is scream at the people outside the chamber because they hadn't seen, heard or felt the same thing as the people inside of the chamber.
This showed them that others CAN have problems without these people(know-it-alls) knowing about what had happened.
