I drink unsweetened cranberry juice ... don't typically eat breakfast, so .... yeah, I know...bad ....but when I'm home I have to be out the door by 7 a.m. (I am not a morning person) .... and when I'm at school, I live in a motel and it's just such a pain.

I'm interested in the connection re: hormones... my episodes seem to be extremely closely related to my cycle... am most at risk - even without illnesses or other triggers (lack of sleep is huge).... during the 5 days immediately prior. I also typically have a great deal of angina during that time.

Ok...that's an important piece of info to give the internist, because they may actually look at taking blood tests to see what your hormone levels are. If the hormones are triggering the FDGB's, then it may be treatable with the use of a hormone supplement. Possibly a cream. As for breakfast, it really is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast, even for when you're in the motel is to get a yogurt (individual serving things can be gotten in gas stations, or in the student union at most colleges) and a piece of fruit. Remember, I said small meals. And yes, that counts as a meal. You see, if you don't eat a breakfast, you're more likely to wolf down food when you do get the chance to eat. And by wolfing it down, you're more likely to overeat. Also, by not eating breakfast, you trick your body into thinking that it's starving, so your body decides to store as much of what you eat as fat to protect itself. so if you're eating something everything every 2 hours...and I mean snacking like a piece of fruit, string cheese (also comes in individual packs), those individual nut packs, etc..then your body will quit panicing and won't store what you eat. Instead, it will burn it for fuel. I usually get those protein bars (works great for a breakfast on the go), string cheese, nut packets, fruit, and yogurts for snacks. But they work good when you're traveling and staying in motels too. Trust me, done it before. My lunches, I pack the night before...but I've got my family hooked on whole grain bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Good hearty meal, fills me up, and has plenty of protein. That and an apple, and I'm set.

Also, if you drink diet soda..stop. Honestly, there have been studies done that show that the artificial sweeteners in them can trigger seizures. Also, people who drink them are more likely to actually eat more sweets later, or to overeat. Why? Because when the brain registers the sweet taste it thinks it's going to get calories. When it doesn't it triggers the hunger response so that it will get the calories and the energy it got robbed of. So no diet sodas, and keep juices at a minimum. Juices tend to be loaded with sugar (unless you drink vegetable juices...but those can be loaded with salt, so look out.). I hope this helped. :)

gave up diet sodas more than a year ago when I heard a neuro guy on talk radio talk about the physical changes he could see on scans of people who drank them...I NEED my brain.... working towards a Phd ... which is hard enough as a nontraditional student; don't need any more challenges than I have.

We do have a fridge and microwave in our motel ...and usually cheese, yogurt and so on ... but mostly for hubby. I'll try to do better at eating in the morning though...see if it makes a difference.

Apparently, according to hubby, I have started to show seizure activity even while sleeping.... had a nap today because I was sooooooooooo tired I couldn't have made it through my class tonight without it... figure it is just a result of having had 7 episodes yesterday and 4 so far today ....

he says 5 now... apparently had one during my nap... right arm going nuts, slapping myself repeatedly. Very strange.

Can't see how that could possibly be a good sign :(

Hi Flitting

I have seizures during my sleep. I pass out. I will be awake and just pass out.

I found out that when I have arm jerks, it is tremors, seizures. I am on mysoline for it. It works. I also take GABA over the counter pill once a day. That works on the jerking and will probably help your slapping.

They are just other forms of seizures.

They are so right you have to eat. I think it's the most important part of any lifestyle. If you look at anyone with health problems or addictions they don't eat. I suffer with hypoglycemia if I don't eat I will surely have a seizure. I know it's hard one of my auras is that awful taste and when that's going on I don't want to eat at all, but you have to force yourself. I can always force down a yogurt or cream of wheat. You must take care of yourself no one else can.:soap:

Hi flinnigan

I love yogurt and oatmeal. Salmon is good for us. When I need to eat, I eat yogurt with a little bit of preserves and pecans. Yummy!!

So ...making a point of trying to eat more regularly

having a LOUSY week though

I have essays to write... tough to concentrate... seems like FDGB is making me a lot more tired than it used to

Hi flitting

Not to eat regularly, just eat what you feel like. If it is nonething. You will waste away.

Yea, I have rotten weeks or days, as well. Being an epileptic, I feel more tired.

Welcome! The advice in here is sound advice for sure. As a math major, I love numbers, so I also suggest keeping a count of glucose levels, evenly drinking the right amount of decaffeinated beverages to avoid dehydration, and getting enough sleep. I set alarms on my cell phone as reminders for meds. And, I de-stress with some good music and a walk with my dog.

The UTI meds can play havoc with epilepsy. I had a script for a UTI this past year and read the side effects. I opted for cranberry juice without sugar added to it. It worked.

Again, we'll figure this out. That sounds like a rather complicated medical issue. It sounds like a lifestyle change, but if it works, it's well worth the effort.
