I had 5 to 6 EEG and MRI they all came normal UNTIL I went to a teaching hospital. I think their equipment is more advanced.

it not unusal for the EEG and MRI to come normal for those of us with E.

thank u, i had a 48 hr eeg four years ago and thats when i was diagnosed with e, now they r wanting to do another just as my disability case is coming up.i worked for ten yrs, had my son and had another seizure at yet another job. well needless to say they said best thing for me to do is sign up on disability. well ive been signed up for 4 yrs now and afraid that this will affect the outcome of my disability case. i had to bounce from job to job, town to town and state to state to keep working because of being "let go" because of my seizures. now my son is 5 and in school i cant do all that moving now and we live in a small town so if i go back to work news will spread fast that i take seizures and i wont be hired at many places. ive been in a catch 22 for the past 5 yrs and not sure what to do, should i postpone my eeg until after my disability case goes through because thats the best thing for me and my son right now is to win this case. i'm losing my only income next month (feb) and my insurance so i'm so confused about what to do....

I wish I knew how to advise you, but I really don't anything about how all that works...getting disability. Having said that I would postpone the text, my thinking is that they will look at the latest test and make their decision by that.

I feel so for you and I will be praying for you.

Thank u so much, i do appreciate that. My son and i need all the prayers we can get. My appt. Is at ten in the morning and i guess im going to go, idk what else to really do. I'm so nervous. I havent had a seizure in a few months but they dont know that. I twitch all the time and my muscles stay in spasms all the time. I have auras, anxiety, depression and bi-polar. Also have been diangnosed as manic depressive.... I have some other health problems that is the reason i am seeing this dr so he can pass me for treatment for that illness...but in a few hoping 2-3 mnths i will have my disability and i really need that for a place to live a car to drive payments for my e meds, my sons future relies on this disability case. I shouldve had it within 6 mnths and its been 4 yrs. So we will get a lot of backpay, which is wonderful considerin i was workin day n night, every shift i could for 10 years ( since i was 15) n all of a sudden had to stop working while i had a 6 mnth old child. We have lived for 5 yrs off of $228 a month because thats what they wanted me to do. My original hearing in front of a judge was sept. 20, 2012....my attorney said he couldn't read this judge so he wouldnt no if we won or lost until we got paperwork back....well the judge gave the woman representin the ppl against me i guess u could say 8 hypothetical jobs and the lady said i could only work one and that was on an assembly line. Been there done that and was let go for seizures. Also if the 2 ladies working beside me hadnt caught me i would have went face forward onto the conveyer belt where my hair couldve got hung up n broke my neck, thanks to them they gently laid me on the concrete floor in which i also could have feel on and busted my head open. Ive only seen this dr once and it was the beginning of jan 2013, and the first thing he said was he definitly didnt want me working on an assembly line, so if he wrote that down than it will help my case but if he didnt then i dont guess it matters that he even said it, u know... I;m sorry to go on n on i havent had anyone to talk to about this in years. Thank u so much for the advise, and now that u know more if u have anymore i would be glad to hear it....once again thank u....ms. Cooper

By the way after i had my hearing as soon as my lawyer and i got away from where the judge could hear us he said u won u won , i said what do u mean i won, he said out of all the hypotheticals she said u could do only 1, u won...he looked like he hit the lottery....well needless to say 19 business days later i got a letter from the social security office where we had my hearing stating that they were denying me.....it had so many lies in it like for one it said after i was "let go" from my last job i recieved workmans comp. Which is a total lie...i had to tell the judge (over the tv hearing) 3 times that i have never ever signed up for workmans comp....its like she couldnt hear me, but the denial letter was filled with lies, so im hoping that we have enough evidence to win, which we should i have been let go from so many jobs because of my seizures its unreal, i can def take care of my child seizures or no seizures i think ive proved that by raising a healthy happy 5 yr old off $228 a mnth for 5 yrs.....its just ridiculous that its taken this long with all the evidence they do have......maybe i should postpone it.... So confused

If you're confused about whether or not the new EEG could mess up your disability case, then you should postpone it until you know what's at stake. Good luck -- I hope things go well for you.

It could help or hurt my case, then again it could also hurt me in getting the treatment i need to get better...i am so confused idk what to do........

I can hear the pain of what you are going through in your writing, and for that I am so sorry. It hard to be Ina situation where you just don't know the right thing to do.

Have you tried taking magnesium, it helps me with my muscle spasms.

I had an EEG a couple weeks ago and oddly enough I had a seizure during the test. It was an absense seizure.....the same as blacking out. The gal that did the test tried to wake me up after the procedure and I wouldnt wake up so she hollered at the nurses and called a code to get some help. They left the EEG machine running to record anything unusual. Odd part about all of it, the Neuro Doc didnt even pick up anything from the eeg other than just the movements from my head during my wake up period.....untill they told him I seized during the test. Guess my point being that sometimes the doc's dont have the faintest idea what happens during the tests....even when something DOES happens.

I NEED TO KNOW IF AN EEG WILL SHOW WHEN I HAD MY LAST EPILEPTIC SEIZURE...

No.

EEGs only record brain activity at the moment that they are hooked up and monitoring. They do not "show" what has happened in the brain in the past. It can, however, record epileptiform activity during the time that it is hooked up and recording. If you are experiencing uncontrolled seizure activity, it can (but not always) record it.

MRIs take a picture of the brain that can show scar tissue, but they also do not "show" what has happened in the brain in the recent past.

Neither diagnostic tool can tell anyone when you last had a seizure.

Bernard is right -- the EEG only shows what's going on at the time of the test, and even then, the EEG doesn't always pick up seizure activity deep in the brain (common with gelastic seizures). This may be why JMalters' absence seizure didn't show up when hooked up.

Our Jon has had seizures when on the EEG, but the simple partial activity that precedes the tonic or tonic/clonic doesn't register on the EEG -- it doesn't show that he's having a seizure until he's about 20 seconds into the seizure.

However, most of the time, even though Jonathan has severe (and apparently progressive) epilepsy, his EEGs are normal. If he is not having a seizure during the time the EEG is going, it usually just shows normal brain waves. He has also had 2 relatively normal MRI's -- and the first MRI he had a seizure during the procedure!!

So...the test may or may not help your case. If, like many of us, you have a normal EEG, that may be misinterpreted to mean that you don't have epilepsy.

Social Security never gets things right. We've been down that road with Jonathan. In his case, he's clearly disabled, because not only does he have Epilepsy, he also has Down Syndrome. So...when we are living in the States, it makes him eligible for health insurance (we have private insurance, but it picks up the $6000 or so each year that our insurance doesn't cover). He also can get a small income, depending on what our salary is. We dutifully notified them every time our family income changed, but they never could seem to get that recorded right. Then...when we left to go back overseas, we notified them, following the proper procedure, and it's now been over 6 months, but they still don't have their records right.

Anyway, I was wondering -- since you also have depression and bipolar (assuming you're seeing a psychiatrist??) if that could help with your case -- if the doctor could document that?
