Was just released from the hosipital today for the inpatient EEG study. I was admitted on Tuesday and didn't have a seizure until Friday AM, then about every hour after that I would have another one, until Saturday morning, which was my last. They diagnosed me with Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. I told my mom who was with me the whole time in the hospital that I never thought I would be happy to hear that I have epilepsy, but it's better then being told that it may be a psychological condition, which has happend quite too freguently these last nine years. I also met 2 awesome doctors and an awesome nurse practitioner who all work in the same office, so if my Neuro still doesnt quite get it, at least I have three prople to choose from to take over my care even if the drive is a little out of the way, I think it is worth it.

Though I guess it's a mixed blessing as you say, congratulations! A conclusive diagnosis is a relief. And finding a good set of doctors and nurse -- well that's a real plus. I hope the seizures you had in-hospital didn't take too heavy a toll on you.

Brianna,

I'm so happy you got a diagnosis! I agree - it's not great being told you have epilepsy, but for me it was kind of a relief. I was so tired of poorly trained doctors telling me I was nuts. Finally I climbed the food chain until I got to an epi, who diagnosed me correctly.

Hey - how did you hold up during your EEG? It's boring, and I went stir crazy staying in bed for 5 days. It also amazed me how quickly we lose strenth and muscle tone.

Brianna,

I am so "glad" that you had some activity on your EEG while you were in the hospital. I have always wanted to do one of those, but am afraid that if I show no activity then the doc will think that I am crazy. I am thinking about giving him the boot and going somewhere else! Best of luck!!

Huskymom,

Don't worry so much about the in-patient video eeg's. They should only diagnose you with NEAD if you have a generalized seizure with nothing showing up on the EEG. Generalized seizures really will show up on the EEG. Partial seizures with nothing showing up doesn't necessarily mean anything. Temporal lobe and frontal lobe partial seizures sometimes don't show on an EEG. If your doc diagnoses you with NEAD for partials with nothing on the EEG, then his diagnosis may be wrong.

Has your primary care physician screened you for all of the alternative explanations for seizures? Like heart (treadmill ultrasound), stroke (CAT scans and MRI's), utoimmune (blood tests), blood sugar (5-hour glucose tolerance test) or other imbalances, etc? Everybody needs a full workup to eliminate other causes. All those are NEAD, too, but are physological, not psychological.
