It seems to me I hear one famous person after another, speak on a medical issue they or one of their family members is dealing with.
Everyone say " You are going to help so many people by sharing this"
which is true.
Why can't a famous person speak on Epilepsy, which would help so many people.

I get off my soap box....

Actor Greg Grunberg has a child with epilepsy and has spoken out. In November 2012, he paired with King (people who have the Candy Crush game) to donate money to the Epilepsy Foundation. Google "Crush Epilepsy" to see more.

Are you speaking of Tom Hanks revealing that he has Type 2 Diabetes? When I heard that, I jokingly said,"Welcome to my world Tommy." Except I have Type 1.

But on to E, there is Lil Wayne- a hip hop recording artist who revealed his epilepsy just this past March. And so does actor Danny Glover and Richard Burton.

And so did John Travolta's son who died several years ago, but they wanted to keep it hush-hush and treat it naturally. And so does one of the judges on the Supreme Court.

I knew about Lil Wayne but there was some discussion of illegal drug use in his case... if that's true he's not helping himself.

Kelly Osbourne (Ozzy's daughter) was also in the news recently with a seizure or seizures and there was talk that she may have Epilepsy.

I do feel like there is a larger stigma associated with epilepsy than diabetes. :( Maybe that's why more famous folks don't talk about it...

I have to agree with JeffD. I think that of all people we who have it should be aware that epilepsy has a larger stigma attached to it then many other diseases. It's for that reason that I think if a public character were to step up & try to represent themself as an epileptic it would be much harder & might effect their career negatively much more than it would help others.

I also know that if I were lucky enough to be a famous actor (like Danny Glover) I would be rather offended if someone told me that I owed it to other epileptics to go public with my disease so I don't really think much about others going public. Of course that doesn't mean I'm not thrilled when people do.

:agree: And, IMO, this is why WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT!!! Just like Diabetes, Epilepsy can effect anyone at any time. The more we talk about it and educate others, we can rid society of the stigma, eventually.

Neil Young is epileptic and still rocks the free world.

Too corny? :P

there is a list on the site somewhere of famous people with epilepsy,

FINALLY! I've made it into the 1%! :roflmao:

Clint, yes I was think of Tom Hanks and the Osborne son! the media talks about their illness! and how they are helping so many people by coming out and talking about it.

JeffD - I just wish E. didn't still have the stigma it has always had.

The University of Minnesota football coach, Jerry Kill, has publicly acknowledged that he has had epilepsy for eight years. He is currently struggling with seizures and his medication and has recently had seizures during games. This past Friday he mhad one the night before the Michigan game, missing the entire game on Saturday. A local sports reporter wrote an article calling for his resignation and stating that Minnesota fans and their entertainment dollars should not have to be exposed to a man seizing on the sidelines. Needless to say, that reporter received local and national backlash. Fortunately, the University of Minnesota president and athletic director have repeatedly stated that they support Jerry 100 percent and are treating his condition as that of any other employee going through a difficult illness or period in their life. Jerry has thrown his support behind the Minnesota Epilepsy Foundation and mentors local kids with epilepsy.

Digging this thread out of recent history because I just found a site with several rather famous people talking about epilepsy. Lots of audio & video, so check your volume before clicking around. I couldn't find a pause button...

:agree: After the stigma and ignorance I experienced this past Saturday, I took to social media. It went a bit viral, and I couldn't be happier. :soap: If it can make even one person THINK before opening their mouths to be hateful, judgmental or mean, then I'm happy it happened to me and that I chose to share it.

I'm waiting to get on my soapbox. Running a radio program about automobiles and motorsports and being involved in the community, I can only imagine what a difference I can make down the line. :D
