The University of Minnesota football coach, Jerry Kill, has publicly acknowledged that he has had epilepsy for eight years. He is currently struggling with seizures and his medication and has recently had seizures during games. This past Friday he mhad one the night before the Michigan game, missing the entire game on Saturday. A local sports reporter wrote an article calling for his resignation and stating that Minnesota fans and their entertainment dollars should not have to be exposed to a man seizing on the sidelines. Needless to say, that reporter received local and national backlash. Fortunately, the University of Minnesota president and athletic director have repeatedly stated that they support Jerry 100 percent and are treating his condition as that of any other employee going through a difficult illness or period in their life. Jerry has thrown his support behind the Minnesota Epilepsy Foundation and mentors local kids with epilepsy.

Unfortunately, the coach recently took an indefinite leave of absence to "try and better manage and treat his epilepsy."

If it can make even one person THINK before opening their mouths to be hateful, judgmental or mean...

Goodness, I really wish I could enter this field but for some reason when seizures start getting ready to hit, what pops into my subconscious mind is an incredibly strong desire to slip away by myself. I don't think it is because I am embarrassed about what is about to happen, I don't think, I just know it is time to slip off so no one watches what is about to happen. Regardless, if we could all make just one (or more) person think before opening their mouth... that would be great!

By the way, the email address for the guy that wrote the article saying they should get rid of the coach because of his epilepsy is jsouhan@startribune.com. He also wrote a really half hearted apology that didn't sit well with me either.

The editor of his paper that apologized but did NOT fire him is Nancy Barnes. Her email is nancyb@startribune.com.
