Yes, the Today Show basically implied, in my healthy opinion, that since they knew that had seizures that he should be watched, at all times, in the shower and because the Travoltas did not they were committing negligence, in a criminal way. I hope my parents, or wife, never has to face that sort of ignorance because I do not like people watching me 24 hours a day in the shower and I can tell you... I will not let them.

Hey paradise! Send me the address for O'Reilly! I'll send him an e-mail. :) And I promise to be polite. :)

It's sad a young life has been cheated by Epilepsy & the Travolta family is grieving for losing it's beloved son. It's dreadful enough as it's therefore, there's no need for second guessing or passing judgments on how the family dealt with this menace, epilepsy.
After all, none can prove any medical treatment could have stopped the final inevitable outcome.
PS: Those of us who have been living under the shadows of this menace for 10 years know, hospital emergency rooms, doctors, ambulance & dreadful subconscious confused living under various drug treatments & being suspect of taking illegal drugs is far more painful than accepting any alternative to cope the menace.
Let's stop passing judgments on how people deal with their misery.

I am so angry at that show!!! (O'Reilly) All it did was pit my husband against me one more time, in the view that "Doctors know best".

"Here are two of the well respected doctors and both of them said that a person with seizures in most cases should be put on medication." ... my husband

I am off to write O'Reilly and his staff, and maybe that medical doctor, a letter that makes their ears burn.

Here comes one ticked off Brainy!

From what I understand, SUDEP normally happens in a person's sleep, but couldn't this all be the case here? I am asking, because I don't know. IF someone could clear that up, that would be great.

To answer your question above - NO!

=====================

I too am fuming about the Today's Show as well.
Moreover in addition with what I will DARE
PROCLAIM THIS:

Just when is ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?

Sufficient is it difficult just to get the PUBLIC
to be informed properly and bring forth all
the enlightenment - we do not need the Media
and the Air Heads to DESTRUCT this with
their idiosyncraziness due to their lack of
understanding and knowledge and second
guessing everything when they "think" they
know when they do not ...

They should have called Epilepsy Foundation,
or at least - got a hold of Dr. Kanner at Rush
He's one bold fellow that would speak out (and
I doubt there is 1 Doctor that does NOT know
who he is!) before they had (excuse my language)
diarrhea of the mouth on the air!

Never broad cast anything until you've been
in a mile in their shoes first!

I emailed his TV show.
I might try to call his radio show tomorrow, or Thursday.

Thank you Paradise for the email address! I just sent a lengthy email suggesting they educate themselves and provided first aid information from the Epilepsy Foundation. (I was not rude, but made it clear that I was outraged).

WOW! I had no idea about the Today show or "O'really?" (lol)!! I can't believe they'd let so-called "specialists" on w/o somewhat pre-screening what they'd say. :soap:

I know from first hand experience that even specialists DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING!

Last month my neuro sent me to a specialist because I had changed meds so many times. She no longer knew what to do for me. When I saw him & explained my sitch to him he said I was intractable & started to suggest all kinds of scary tests & taking me off meds & surgery & basically freaked me (& my fam) out!

He said that sometimes they didn't know everything.

He was SO right! Since my last change in meds I've been stable for over 3 months (the longest I've gone w/o symptoms since I was first diagnosed) & my neuro even apologized to me for sending me to see him. She basically told me (in not so many words) that he didn't know what he was talking about. :pfft:

Every E case IS different. To go on TV like that & not take that into account & then blame the family for their so-called negligence is just ignorant.

The lady who said those things on the Today Show was the "all knowing" TV reference for NBC. They have several and you would recognize them if you saw them. There is this lady and an older man that wears glasses that you instantly recognize.

Thanks paradise! I emailed O-reilly this morning, gave some of the basic info about epilepsy, first aid for seizures, and invited him or his staffers to visit the site and get some more detailed info. Also, I suggested that he could use his show to educate his viewers about epilepsy, as the specialists on his program had given some possibly misleading as well as blatantly wrong information.

Unfortunately

people like O'reilly and Limbaugh know they use imflamitory language, emotional rhetoric, and try to argue from authority. They have been emailed for other reasons before, and have refused the facts because they feel that if they based their shows based on fact, the ratings for their shows would go down. (Isn't that what is going on anyway?)

I am also upset with the people at work. They said that Jett died from demon posession because they (Travoltas') belonged to a false religion.
I have had enough with the cult called from fundamentalism.

I also

wanted to add that I have known other people with epilepsy. They have died in the bathroom. One, we actually saw fall down stairs at work. He died a couple of years later in the shower. (And yes, there were the ignoramuses that wanted 'cootie shots' because they wanted to avoid seizures.)
Another co-worker and another job later, had regular seizures (daily) and yes, I was the first responder thru most of them. His wife merely announced one day that he would not return to work, because he had died. No explanation was ever offered, and she severed all contact with us.
I try to take each day as it comes, because I know that I will not necessarily die from a seizure, but I may die from some fundie who wishes to 'save' me.

A comment about the Today Show talking about seizures.

I am completely appalled that they would not only comment about the Travolta case, but they still refuse to speak about the real facts. I mean, Al Roker's joke two years ago referred to how people die ( actually, his joke could have been how Jett died) and everyone on that show laughed at the joke, from Matt Laurer to the other anchorwoman.

And by the way, I read on this site and another one that the wrong information is being represented to the public. Well, whose job is it to represent the factual information? I can't believe it needs to be us, and would think that people who are supposedly getting paid money to help us are not doing anything, at least visible. Why should we have to email O'reilly when you would think these celebrities that are praised for helping out with epilepsy are not doing a thing? I am not saying they have to, but man, it would be nice for them to say something.

Am I completely wrong and just bitter, or does anyone agree with me.

No, you're not wrong and bitter Santa. Yes, I feel that we should not have to present the current information. The "specialists" should do that. And the staffers for various shows should double check the basics of what the guests are going to be discussing. And yes, spokespeople and celebrities who have spoken out should be apeaking out now. But what should be the case, and what is the case are often 2 different things.

In this case, where others fail to do what they should, we do what we must.

I did hear a "specialist" say on TV that you should stuff a rag in the mouth so the person doesn't swallow their tongue. Scary.... Wed all better get out to our schools and work places to really inform the ignorant. As they seem to be multiplying!!! Like stop, drop and roll. We should have something like... get to floor, roll to side, wait. Maybe make a rap song out of it lol*

And Limburgh, you would think he'd be a bit more considerate as he had to ask for forgiveness and help for his self inflicted drug addiction. And as of yet? Ive found no one that went out of their way to get E.

Just a nasty week, this week, filled with nasty, ignorant folks.

Joan, do you remember what show this specialist said this on? This is such a major issue for people, and something I am trying to fight, that I would love to know which show it was, and I will contact them.

I am just so disgusted right now, I feel sick.
