has anyone has Blood Sugar problems while on KEPPRA.

I have been on it for 3 years but my neurologist is still juggling my dosage.

When I first started KEPPRA I felt tired, somewhat dizzy and lightheaded as though my blood sugar levels were playing up. I even had dizzy spells and blackouts.

Has anyone felt their blood sugar levels are up and down with the KEPPRA.
I was just told today that they were HIGH and i have never had this problem before neither has my diet changed and I am really worried that the KEPPRA may be the cause because it bring me depression, makes me feel stressed and i feel it has brought me on panic attacks too.

anyone with similar symptoms let me know please.

I've been on Keppra for 12 years now plus I have Type 1 Diabetes. The Keppra can bring on depression, rage, panic attacks, dizzy spells plus it could cause hypoglycemia. I've never had the Keppra being the cause of HIGH blood sugar. I do suffer from depression also and take an anti-depressant. Sometimes my blood sugar drops extremely low, but I don't think it is from the Keppra.

Those "blackouts" could be seizures and your medication may need to be adjusted. Or maybe you need to try another med.

Are you seeing an endocrinologist? Have you had the A1c test?

Hi Cint,

thanks for the reply. No I have not seen an endocrinologist nor have I had the A1C test. I have another appointment with my doctor this week and I will bring this up with him .

Any handy tips on what I should eat to bring the Blood sugar level down . I have been stressed lately and now with this news I have been even more stressed. If i can get it down and start now rather than wait until my doctor tells me what to do it would be great and hopefully i can beat this thing. Diabetes is an awful thing to have and its all because of the ingredients and chemicals they put in our foods nowadays . If we didn't have all those chemicals in our foods we would be much healthier and would all live longer like those in the villages .

Start off by reducing the stress as stress can definitely raise the glucose level in anybody (plus bring on more seizures). And watch your carb intake, especially refined carbohydrates like white grains. Get lots of fresh fruits and veggies, especially leafy green veggies and whole grain foods.

KEPPRA is really worst and I will suggest you to stop. I was diagnosed with diabetes and I had similar problem like you due to KEPPRA. Then my doctor suggested to stop KEPPRA intake and start sugar free diet with regular morning walk and seriously in a month I saw effective.

I hope you get better. I am on Keppra and I also have diabetes 2. When I was first started on Keppra, my neuro told me to take Vitamin B-Complex every day. That has really helped me.

I was eating the same foods as well. I decided to check the ingredients of the foods that I was eating. They had changed some of the ingredients that caused my blood glucose to go higher.

I had to readjust the foods that I was eating. Now, my numbers are where they are suppose to be.

I take 1500mg daily of Keppra and I did notice an increase in my blood sugars. My endo added a quick acting insulin only around the time I take Keppra and this has truly helped. Stay well and reduce your stress as that can cause sugars to spike up and or down.

Quick question. How much all of you taking each day?

I take 3000 mgs. a day- 1500 mgs in the a.m./1500 mgs in the p.m along with 3 short acting insulin shots with meals and a long acting insulin shot in the morning and at bedtime. My endo doesn't seem to think the Keppra effects my blood sugar. I do watch my carbs and sugar intake.

Thanks Niki! The reason I asked is my neurologists added 1000mg/day of Keppra to the 400mg/day of lamictal I had already been on. I had been on 300mg/day of lamictal till early Nov. /late Oct. I had like 4 grand mals, 2 one day, and two weeks later two on another day, which is when they upped my dose to 400/day.

So when I went and saw them around Dec. 14, everything was the same and had been fine for the previous 5 weeks, and they were gonna keep me on the 400mg/day of the lamictal. So 4 days later they called backed and said they wanted to add the keppra to my meds.
Anyways I been a little wary of starting on it, 1, because I didn't really want to start taking two meds every day, and 2 I was a bit wary of keppra, from what I had read.
But from what I've read 1000mg/day actually sounds to be to the low side of what many people take. I did go and get the script filled, but have yet to start taking it, which may be quite foolish on my part, but I will likely start on it in the next few days. I had hoped to hear back from the neurologist after having my levels tested again a week and a half ago to discuss this more, my levels for the lamictal had been quite high when they were checked back middle of Dec.

Anyways thanks for getting back to me. I did notice in the other thread about keppra, no one really states how much they they take each day, which I find a bit weird, but oh well. Have nice day, and thanks again.

my sons on keppra

He's been on a low dose of keppra for just under 2 years after suffering complex seizures,(though never been diagnosed with Epilepsy), and has has just started getting seizures due to low blood sugar.
His high temperatures used to cause seizures ( probably due they say, to having a Stroke on his second day) so he went on to keppra. We also gave him tissue salt Ferr phos and his tempers have stabilised from the moment we started giving it. Now however, he recently suffered a semi seizure and slight loss of consciousness due to low blood sugar. Having seen a study online that says keppra can cause low blood sugar, now he is three i think he's better to be off the keppra now he seems to have out grown the complex seizures.

Definitely talk to your son's neuro about reviewing his medication needs. A nutritionist might also help with the low blood sugar issues.
