Sustained several seizures today
(Saturday, November 8th)
Complex Partials, Absence, and Reflex.

Lovely - NOT!

My son sent me to bed, as he always does;
even then I lapsed into Reflex seizures
in my sleep! Laughter for a brief moment,
several times, then broke out crying, and it
was odd - because I had no memory or
anything of this; He had to wake me up,
which resulted me to become startled!

It took me quite some time to get back in
sync - I was talking "gibberish" for about
3-5 minutes and then it was gradual improvement
as he stated, but I couldn't pronounce words
right - that is his common complaint, which
everyone knows about this (even Doctors):
slurring words and pronouncing words
wrong - I finally got to after all these years
got to learn exactly how I talk during just
before a seizure or postictal stage
.

=======================

Slurring:

  • mumbles or jumbles words
  • incoherent speech (as if one was excessively drunk)
  • no real vocalization at all, as if one had a major dental work and had way too much Novocaine; where tongue, mouth, lips are in numbness stage

Gibberish / Pronunciation:

  • childish talk - ie: things you would hear from a child who is learning to talk.
  • pronouncing words wrong; ie: says "moy" for more, "birdsdy" for thirsty, "mup" for cup, "VeeBin" for Steven (my son).
  • simple children's sentences; ie: Mup Birdsdy Ve Brink. (if not pronoucing words right - it would be Cup thirsty me drink.) Me want food. Hungry. (if talking properly but not fully coherent)
  • bilingualism - ie: bounces between English with Spanish in one short sentence. It's rare, but does happen.

They have also remarked that when they do not
understand me (postictal), I point, and they're
trying to make out what I'm trying to say, and
when they're not getting it. I get frustrated and
begin to cry and get confused; where my son
puts me back to bed - and it's strange, because
instantly I fall asleep anywhere from a half hour
to several hours (depending on how severe the
seizure or seizures were earlier).

If it was BEFORE the seizure, my son will put me
to bed right away after he checks to make sure I
had taken my meds (even though he knows I take
them on schedule, he always checks anyway).
He then will keep an eye on me from that standpoint.

When I am having absences, if I blip out in mid conversation I have from time to time started talking rubbish that is totally unrelated to the conversation at all. Sometimes when I come out of the seizure I can remember what I said during the seizure and this does cause my friends to give me some very strange looks. - But one thing you've got to remember is that they do not know that I am epileptic and that they had just witnessed a seizure, so they must think that I am not listening to them or I am finding their chat boring hehe, don't you just love selective hearing.

The other day, after a seizure...I wouldn't say it was that large. Not a TC seizure or anything. I repeated a phrase that someone had said to me right after I had waken up. I kept repeating for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Speech arrests

Hi Brain,

I get those too, my neurologist calls them "speech arrests".
It is my form of a "petit mal" seizure. I am totally aware of my surroundings and what ppl are saying but I can't respond ~ for a few seconds and then over the next 10 minutes or so I gradually return to "normal".

My neurologist says that if I wasn't on any medication, this would be a full blown grand mal seizure. He also says that that is a sign that the meds are doing there job.

I think I am talking normal - but reality checker says he could not understand

After my last seizure, I forget days, I was talking to my companion/reality checker on the phone and he kept telling me to talk up, he was just up in the dining room of our facility. Come to find out, he gave the phone to someone else, and they said my words were slurred (a nurse) and could not understand. Yet, I was getting mad because I was talking totally plain - I thought.

pre/post, I don't know, but sometimes, I will say a phrase like 10 times as the seizure is developing.

I posted 2 new blogs on myspace re: epilepsy.

I firmly feel that people need to know we are just that - PEOPLE - just like them. They may have a breathing DISORDER - we just have and electrical DISORDER. Can't catch our cooties - bugs - so to speak. It's not a cold, it is just a short in the wiring, I reckon.

Anyway, one more thing, if you can endure,

When I type or talk, I get kinda dyslexic - is that a part of E or just ME???

I actually was on the phone with my Neurologist's
Office once and had one of those and they were
the ones who phoned the Medics and had me sent
to the ER! (They also had it recorded, since all calls
on their line are recorded anyway).

In addition, I believe Birdbomb experienced me going
through this when I spoke with her on the phone.

I have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM.
One of the main issues and complaint is
"She repeats herself"
One of the witnesses likened it as a scratched
record stuck - And an Epileptologist who had
actually witnessed it called it "Bizarre!".

I have had this problem for decades since I've
learned to talk ... which leads to answering the
underlined above ...

I am dysarthric (look up Dysarthria in Wikipedia
or Google it up), was born this way - this one is
a Neurological problem for me but it worsens with
the seizures. So my case isn't associated with
everyone else, since I'm mitochondrial.

As for the ability to WRITE / TYPE - even the
reports of those "switching of normal hand"
to write "reversed hand usage" (if you're a
right-hand writer, suddenly switches to writing
with your left because of seizures) are part of
Epilepsy itself. However, there are those that
have Learning Disabilities and other Neurological
Problems that can be an issue that is NOT related
to Epilepsy but can worsen when Epilepsy strikes,
but if one does not have such known problem, and
only appears when Epileptic Seizures are manifested
then it is associated with Epilepsy.

You are not alone, I suffer from this - writing and
typing and not making sense. I will be HONEST to
imply I've sent emails off to Bernard and I think to
Donna too (??) and when they responded back, I
nearly wanted to die of embarrassment! I couldn't
believe what I typed! I had made some postings that
would have left people with question marks hovering
over one's heads ... with a "HUH"?

All the more to LOATHE "E"!
