I found this list of drugs that may lower the seizure threshold. Interestingly, fentanyl is on this list and I had a break-through seizure after just one dose of this pain medication. Wish I would have known. Also, not on this list but possibly from the Neuropathy Assoc there is a list of antibiotics that can worsen neuropathy. I have neuropathy from RA also.

Thanks CQ I did not see that link. Together they make one heck of a scary list.

I find this pretty important. I think anyone who can give anti-depressants needs to be aware of the seizure threshold being lowered by the medications they hand out. They attributed to my first breakthrough seizure, no doubt about that.

I've just been prescribed quite large doses of two of the antibiotics on that list for a large dental abcess.

Only just picked them up so i haven't taken any yet.

Sorry all... My title is incorrect, but I cannot edit it. As per the chart the title of my post should be:

Drugs that May Lower the Seizure Threshold.

There are drugs on the list I have taken with no problem, but I did have a problem with fentanyl. As with all drugs, we all react differently.

Loopy. A dental abscess is really serious. I have taken several of the antibiotics on the list without a problem. Maybe you should call your dentist or your situation may be where the benefits outweigh the possible risks.

I just checked the leaflet for the antibiotic i've not had before and it says that it can affect certain epilepsy medications but luckily not the ones i'm on. The other antibiotic i've had before for chest infections so i think i should be ok :)

Fixed!

Lots of drugs interact with each other. I was seeing a dr. for depression due to epilepsy and he put me on an anti-psychotic. After being on it for just two months, I started losing weight, getting blurred vision and was very tired, moreso than usual. I was worried because of my vision loss and went to my optometrist. Within several minutes of the exam, my optometrist asked if I had started any new meds and told me that I have Diabetes. I was shocked. So now, I take insulin shots 5 times a day in addition to 3000 mgs. Keppra and some Topomax. And if my glucose falls down in the 50's or lower, which it has, I could go into a seizure. Especially during the night.

So, the point of my story is: BEWARE of ALL meds! Don't be intimidated by doctors! Ask questions!!!!
