I have tried a few times to stay on a no meat, oil or nuts diet but have not
been successful. I would like to get my chol & triglycerides down to normal but after about a day of this I start having the weird feeling in my stomach that usually means a seizure is about to happen. Other than that I don't have a problem with the diet but this gnawing feeling (I'm not hungry) is very
unsettling. If I go to bed feeling this way I can't relax or sleep & usually have to get up & eat some meat. What causes this? Does anyone else experience this? Thanks.
 
If you are definitely getting enough calories and hydration on the diet, then you can probably rule out low blood sugar or electrolyte imbalance as a trigger. It's possible that the lack of fats is a seizure trigger for you -- the diets that have had had the most success with seizure control are ones that are high-fat to low-carb ratio. In kids, the diet that has been most successful is the ketogenic diet, which emphasizes on consuming fats in the form of things like butter and mayonnaise, and very strictly limited carbs. In both kids and adults, another diet that has helped is the Modified Atkins Diet, which also emphasizes proteins and fats over carbs. (These diets basically work by changing the brain's energy source from glucose to fatty acids and ketones. These substances create a state known as ketosis, which protects the brain, and prevents the excitation of the neurons.)

So it might be a better idea to transition more slowly onto the low-fat diet, and/or retain some of the "good" fats like nuts and olive oil in small amounts. Have you discussed the diet with your regular doctor and your neurologist?
 
Thanks for info. My internist is for a low fat diet & I don't have a very good neurologist. There's nothing to choose from in my area.
