Medical Marijuana

Brotherhasit, I have epilepsy and have been treating it with great success for 6 months. If it is legal in your state there are clinics that are only there for people who qualify for medical marijuana.......anyone with seizures would be able to get a precription for medical marijuana as it is has shown to help alot of people. It may not be easy for your brother though as he is under 18 and at the very least he will need his parents to agree. And don't give your hopes up it doesnt work for EVERYONE with seizures but I hope you find something that does.

try looking into the THCF clinics. if there isn't one in your state they will have information on their websites with what you can do.

One thing I can recomend as a medical marijuana user for seizures is to take it at night just before going to sleep that way the high won't effect your busy day and if it has a bad effect on an individual they may be able to sleep through it.

Yes in WA state you can. And it would have to be written in an iep and the nurse would have to know and a doctor would have to write a note. And if you are a special ed teacher you would have to get it okd or by the doctor or if he did not take it at school it would just be on his med list. At least that is the way it is here in WA.

The following states have or allow the use of medical marijuana with proof (a doctor's note or prescription):

AK
CA
CO
HI
MD
ME
MI
MT
NJ
NM
NV
OR
RI
VT
WA

The following states have decriminalized marijuana to a small extent, meaning that a first offense of possession of a small amount [generally less than 2 ounces or 200 grams] of the otherwise illegal drug for personal consumption is treated much the same as a traffic offense. Subsequent offenses, however, carry harsher penalties unless the state allows the use of medical marijuana:

AK
CA
CO
MA
ME
MN
MS
NC (their decriminalization only allows for less than one half of an ounce)
NE
NY
NV
OH
OR

In short, if the state you live in does not appear on the top list, it's still obviously your decision, but one to make understanding the potential consequences.

I know it would be great for nausea, stress, and that right there would help my life seizures and other wise.

Actually, I'm pretty sure WA's medicinal use law allows it for seizures. I know that the VA recently approved it for some types of seizures (I'm sorry, but the Federal government approving and dispensing marijuana for anything makes me laugh so hard it's not funny!) in states where the law allows it.

Personally, I'm a bit liberal on the stuff, but since it's illegal in my state and I personally do not like not being in full control of myself, I won't touch it. Still...in my experience, 99.9% of the crimes committed while stoned were probably against a bag of doritos, so to each his/her own: if it works for ya and your doc is cool with it, it's not my place to say you should or shouldn't do something. *shrug*

I have tried it for s. And it worked for a while . But it was just a little a couple of hits. You can also do pill form. It does make me nervous to just make it a legal drug though.

I do smoke as it calms my anxiety and I think it helps with my stress level. I don't smoke very much, just a little in evening. When I was going thru trauma and multiple surgeries, infections, etc...I lost a lot of weight and never had an appepitate and doc put me on Marinol. (pill form of artifical THC)...it did help me to be able to eat and as far as other benefits, I don't know, I was on heavy duty pain medication, fentanol.
I recently visited in WA state and a friend had access to the medical marijuana and gave me some candy. I have to say I preferred this method over smoking it. If I ever had the option, I would choose this. I don't think it would be something that would make me choose to go off my Keppra...I just look at it as adjunct therapy.
I personally think marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol...I think alochol is much more dangerous drug

I agree. I am so stressed out I could use just a little. It's better then some of the heavy stuff the doctors want to put me on.

The cannibis culture of the Bay area just blew me away last year!! Atleast its a more friendlier place for mj users by far, then here in the Lone Star State. Wish I could move!! :embarrassed:

I'm from the bay area, and yea it's very tolerable there. I was pulled over several times and admitted I had personal use MJ in the car, and they never took it away, only one time the cop had me dump it in a bush, but I went back the next day and grabbed it up. It was the sticky ichy lol. I have to say though, if it helps use it responsibly. I've read several accounts on different web sites this weekend of people that started taking edibles, and they' were able to get off their seizure meds completely. I know it's not for everyone, but personally, I'll try whatever it takes to get rid of these bad boys.

This is very true. There are 2 basic kinds - indica (body high) and sativa (heady high). The heavier indica strains work much better for me. Strong sativas have the opposite affect, and make me feel worse. I like to stay away from those.

Sativa strains will definately make you feel worse and increase the chances of a seizure, I always found those created a really rushy n uncomfortable high. Indica is the best one to stick to if you're looking to calm the brain and body.

Epilepsy and Cannabis Links from Granny Stormcrow

Epilepsy has been used to ameliorate seizures for thousands of years. It is one of the conditions officially specifically listed on my California medical cannabis doctor approval form.

I am a longtime cannabis user with refractory temporal lobe seizures since childhood. I wanted to smoke cannabis before ever I saw the stuff. Once I had some, it made life much more doable. Only after I got my diagnosis in 2006, at the tender age of 45, did I understand why I've been using it so tenaciously.

Anyway, years ago I ran across something called Granny Stormcrow's List. I urge everyone to have a look - at least at the intro, which is very wise.

"If the truth won't do, then something is wrong!" is the mother's dictum with which the list opens.

Something is wrong with the laws against cannabis. There is ample evidence, both historical and clinical, testifying to the many therapeutic uses for cannabis. And yet cannabis remains contraband in the US because it "has no recognized medical use".

In fact, if you Google "The government knew in '74" you will find out just how far the government has gone to hide the evidence of the medical efficacy and safety of cannabis - in this case, against cancer. That is a great crime.

Please find below the Granny Stormcrow links about epilepsy and medical cannabis.

BTW it seems to me too that my epilepsy is helped more by CBD (Cannabidiol, not particularly psychoactive) than by THC (the main but by no means the only psychoactive component).

Interesting! CBD is also the particular cannabinoid that has been found to help MS patients, and seems to have other neuroprotective effects as well.

I've been reading her lists for a while too and am grateful she took the time to compile all the great info!!

Unfortunately, a lot of those links don't work anymore. :-(

I have tried Marijuana many times, and I have never had a seizure when smoking. I have not had much improvement in my seizures even after my surgery. I will be further discussing this with my doctor. The very first medical license in Canada was given to a patient with Epilepsy.

I tried a little for a while , it helped me be more productive and I told my dr. We will see what happens.

I quit smoking a long time ago but might look in to getting a license and cooking with it as well as pill form. Baking with it is just as good as smoking. Like alot of people have said on here when they were smoking it they were actually doing a little better. I will have to look into this a little more, and find someone else to talk about it, I know my neurologist is all about himself and wants to keep pumping meds in his patients.

Keep in mind that marijuana is a "med" too --with precautions, limitations, and side effects both short- and long-term. Certain varieties have more of the cannabinoids that can play a role with seizure control. As with the traditional meds, consistency can be important -- both with the size of the dose and when it is taken.

I love edibles. I make a pan of brownies, slice and then individually wrap them and freeze. Its awesome just being able to grab one when needed, the times when I'm concerned with odor control, etc....

Cannabis with high THC has fewer Cannabinoids, so I like the stuff that most of the recreational users don't want. BTW GW Pharma has been conducting studies on the effcacy of it's use in Epilepsy. Sorry I can't post links, but there is information on their website about this. go to GWPharma.com click on R&D and go to Epilepsy
