Hi there,

Last night my husband had his fourth nocturnal seizure since Feb. This was much milder. It was less than a minute and a few minutes after it was over, Mike said 'I need to go to the washroom'. He was not shaky and totally lucid. He said he was awake during the seizure, found it hard to breathe but felt he could almost stop the seizure but found it was really long. This was so different from the other ones where he was right out of it and couldn't talk at all.

Is this the medication taking affect? Has anyone else been 'awake' during a seizure?

Does it take a while at first to find the right level of medication?

Any info would be appreciated. :)

Sue

I've always thought that I was awake during my seizures. It was only when I was in my 40s and had a seizure that I'd realized afterwards that I'd walked a few yards past a landmark & had no recollection of it. I ignored it but a few years later I came out of & was in the middle of an intersection with cars honking that I was forced to acknowledge that I might not be awake & alert like I'd thought.

Do be careful, maybe he is awake but maybe he is not awake & just not aware of it.

It's possible that the med is working to at least partially control the seizure and prevent full loss of consciousness. And it can take some tweaking to find the right dose, especially if there are other medications or other health issues potentially playing a role.

Is he just starting on medication? Cause if he is, with me at least my doctor said you have to gradually build up to the max dose so your body gets used to it and stuff. I started at 250 MG per day, twice a day for a week, increased it to 500 per day, twice a day for a week and last week now up to 750 MG per wek, twice per day, so now I'm at 1,500 MG a day

My seizures Ive been having are simple partial seizures where Im aware of whats going on during the seizures. Its a milder form of seizure compared to a grand mal seizure, but you are aware of whats going on during the seizure.

I agree, I have to ask if he is just starting a medication? If so, he is probably on a low dose, working his way up. If thats the case, it could be a small seizure going on til the dose increases and controlls all the seizures from coming.

Hi there,

And thanks for your responses. Mike started with a low dosage and is up to 750 mg in the morning and 1000mg in the evening. He's had 4 nocturnal seizures since Feb. and this was the mildest one.

What is the safe level for these meds? His level right after the seizure was 604.

We're waiting for the neurologist to determine whether to raise his meds or switch him to a new one.

I had no idea he was awake during it. It lasted about 40 seconds and he recovered immediately which never happened before. He was talking to me right away.

Thanks,
Sue

That sounds alot like the seizures I have. Im aware prior during and after my seizure. Once the seizure is over, I can talk back to others normally. Its just the feeling of being tired and worn down that sticks with me after the seizure. I hope things get better! Let us know what the dr says!
