Well, yesterday I was finally diagnosed with epilepsy. I have complex partial siezures. Not a big suprise. I knew it was coming.

I have been on the migraine dosage of topomax for a few months now and my neurologist has now increased my dosage to try and stop the seizures. I am a little nervous about this medication. I have a low tolerance for medications and am scared about how many of the side effects this drug will have on me after increasing the dose. Already this drug does weird things to me and I am on a super low dose. I am usually pretty laid back and I like who I am. I don't want it to change that. Does that sound dumb?

Congratulations on your diagnosis. It's taken some people a long time until they were diagnosed.

I would look up the side-effects of medication and try to be aware of them. Be careful though not to see something that was already there before because you read it in the list of side-effects.

Also remember that quite often side-effects can disappear as your body adapts.

It can be a crapshoot with the meds and their side effects. The main thing is to keep track of how you are feeling so you'll be able to tell if or when the seizure control is worth the side effects. I'm more accepting of side effects after going through three meds, so lowering expectations is sometimes part of it unfortunately. I'm still hoping to go med-free one of these days...

I know it's only been a few days but so far so good, which is suprising (yes, I had my doubts)... I was a little dopey the first couple of days at first ramp up, but that has gone away. I am losing weight, but watching it closely and nothing to call the doc about just yet. My limbs have been going numb off and on, which can be annoying but is completely manageable and has not caused any pain or made me change any part of my day or actions. The only thing that is weird is, whenever I eat or drink, and I mean WHENEVER, the roof of my mouth goes numb... It is the strangest feeling ever.

I have not had a siezure, this may not say much just yet though. I will know more at full dosage and after about 2 months. Here's to hoping.

Now, I am not at full dosage so more may end up happening, but if all I have to deal with is annoying sleepy limbs a numb mouth in exchange for no migraines and ESPECIALLY NO siezures then all is well with the world! I'm out for now, with crossed fingers.
