I have had epilepsy all my life, and can give some advice, but would also like to know a few things about what others are doing. I have had some recent setbacks, so any new advice is welcome!

WELCOME TO CWE
I have to say that your post is a bit vague. How can one give advice when there is no information given?
Sorry to hear that you are are experiencing problems lately.

Hope you find some good information here.

Well, I hoped to start a chat first, get to know someone to see what medications they have tried, etc. I have been taking vitamin B supplements for nervous system support, as I have Restless Leg Syndrome as well. I was wondering if anyone had tried a similar treatment

Welcome !!

You have a great place . The host Bernard is awesome and the moderators are very supportive. We support each other and listen to each others thoughts and opions. So welcome!

My daughter takes B complex as a part of her supplements.
She had a situation the other night where her legs went into spasm, just as she was going to sleep. I gave her some ionic magnesium and had her drink some Emergen C as that has certain vitamins and minerals that help electrolyte imbalances. It seemed to help her get to sleep.

Although the exact cause of RLS is unknown, a number of conditions are associated with it including:

* Iron deficiency
* Low dopamine levels
* Lesions within the spinal cord or peripheral nerves
* Pregnancy-related deficiencies in iron, folate, and magnesium (Lee KA et al 2001; Manconi M et al 2004)
* Kidney disease, particularly end-stage kidney disease
* Medications, such as tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, lithium, and caffeine (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute 2000)

Does the Vitamin B help you?

Nonpharmacologic management

Patients with suspected restless legs syndrome who are sensitive to caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine should avoid these substances.

Supplementation to correct deficiencies in vitamins (eg, folate), electrolytes (eg, magnesium) (7), or iron may improve symptoms. Patients with prominent varicose veins in the legs.

Hi Ptolemy, welcome to the forum. :hello:

There are quite a few members here that thought their seizure condition was gone only to experience seizures many years later. We have members here doing many different things to control their seizures. Most take AEDs on the advice of their doctors, but a few are also trying diets (LGIT, MAD, GARD/GFCF, Ketogenic), vitamin/mineral/supplements, neurobehavioral therapy and EEG neurofeedback amongst other things.

Hi and welcome to CWE

Ptolemy!

You've found a wonderful place to be. Mr B (Bernard) has made us an AWESOME home here.

Feel free to ask questions, vent, or whatever you need. There are different rooms in the house for different needs......

Do you have any idea why you've had trouble this past month or so??

Take care,

Meetz

Not sure if the B complex helps, I have not been on it fo long enought to know. I do take a magnesium citrate supplement, it seems to help me sleep. Magnesium citrate is supposed to be the most absorbable kind. What I have found that helps is daily excercise, at least it seems that way. Does your daughter get a good amount?

Meetz1064 - not sure why I started having problems - it seems the meds just stopped working. I am wondering if it had anything to do with the natural supplements I was taking. I haven't found anything in my research that would suggest so, but I guess one or more may having affected the absorption of the meds. Not sure why the problem would continue after stopping the natural supps. In any case, I am giving Lamictal a try.....

I would have to disagree with the fact that magnesium citrate is best absorbed. It is commonly used as a laxative. Which would mean it would get flushed out rather quickly. Also the amount of magnesium in magnesium citrate is only about 11%. It also tends to pull water out of the system, which aids in emptying the bowel.

Chelated magnesiums are a much better absorbed variety in tablet form. However the best absorbed is a liquid ionic. It is 100% magnesium and is absorbed directly into the cell.

My daughter is using approx 1000 mg of chelated magnesium on a good day (when all of her supplements are remembered). It is now being researched and they are finding that the RDA is possibly too low. I am sure this will take some time to get to the mainstream articles.

I use between 500-1000 mg of ionic magnesium and have eliminated all migraine activity, which I suffered with for 30+ yrs.

Good information to know

I did not know that about magnesium - I guess my sources were a bit off. I will surely look into the ionic Mg. I am glad to hear that you have been able to eliminate your migraines. Don't know if anyone has found Mg to help with seizure activity. Mine continues mildly, but I will hope for the best. It takes at least a month to build up a therapeutic Lamictal level I have found. You begin with a starter kit, to avoid a serious rash.

I went on 20 mi bike ride yesterday and today, after taking a week off (where my RLS returned) last night no episodes. I will see what happens tonight.

Welcome to CWE. :) We're a pretty friendly bunch, so feel free to ask questions, rant, or just chime in. :) Also, check out the different threads in the library here. There's lots of info. :)
