Are myoclonic jerks considered seizure activity?

Some are and some are not. Hypnic jerks like when you are falling asleep and have a big twitch or jerk and for most people hiccups are not seizures.

They can be benign or indicate any number of neurological problems, it all depends on things like the type, frequency, duration, triggering mechanism.

If this is a new symptom it would be best to discuss it wirh your doctor.

It's not new but it seems like I've noticed it more lately. I gotten woken up a few times in the night from my knees knocking together. My wife noticed the muscle jer lingerie in the night as well. This might be why I sleep so poorly.

There are "myoclonic seizures" and a condition called "myoclonus". Both are neurological problems, but myoclonus is frequently is not due to seizure activity.

My neurologist is sending for a new MRI and neuropsychological accessment and an EEG (longer than sleep deprived if I remember correctly ). I'm still waiting to hear back about my sleep apnea text that I did roughly three or four weeks Go.

Hi gnault,

I am wondering if these myoclonic jerks are happening because you may be having seizures in your sleep. This is what happened with me and my Dr. did a sleep study on me along with a e.e.g. and e.k.g. and saw I was having seizures in my sleep 1-2 hrs. before waking up in the morning. Since you have sleep apnea I have heard that can trigger seizures also. I wish you the best of luck on the MRI and neuropsychologist accessment. May God Bless You!

I haven't heard back on the sleep apnea test yet. I think my restless sleep might be because of the muscle jerking. It doesn't seem to happen often. I noticed it last Saturday at suppertime. One small muscle spasm/jerk with my leg and another small one with my arm the same side (right). They were very minor movements.

Nothing to make a big deal about but something to make sure my neurologist knows about. I'll see what happens next.

- possible myoclonic jerks
- lost my car (took 15 - 20 minutes to find as I walked up and down streets)
- forget names
- yesterday had a hard time spelling antiacid

I guess I'll try to keep a list of some of these things especially leading up to the neuropsychologist assessment (good thing for spell check as I couldn't spell neuropsychologist).

Hi gnault,

It sounds like we have a little in common. I'm terrible at remembering names but I can remember the persons face, when I have a complex partial seizure I will often wander off not realizing what I'm doing and when the seizure is over I will find myself in a different location it can be a pain for me especially if I'm shopping or at work. Years ago I had no problems with spelling but after the surgery my spelling went down hill. According to my neuro this is all do to problems in the cerbal cortex of my brain.
Have a good day and May God Bless You!

Sue
