In my symptom venture of which I've discussed in other threads, I have olfactory and gustatory auras of a burn smell/taste quality, always unpleasant, and after the initial aura clicks in, the bad taste and smell persists for the remainder of the day, only going away after a night's sleep (although occasional I have had >than 24 hour marathons of it). Many times before the aura clicks in, I have nasal congestion. Today I had nasal congestion for an hour preceding the aura which I just had about 1/2 hour ago. (so now you know my enjoyable rest of day which be spent in burn smell/taste enjoyment *sarcasm*)
I don't always get the nasal congestion before the aura. Many times I have no identifiable antecedent or trigger. Sometimes an external smell of burnt food/residue, (e.g. fried food on a skillet; something being baked in oven) will set off the aura. Because of the smell also doing it, this hints at migraine, hence the question of which I have, E or migraine (both?). But this nasal congestion I have read references to TLE, and if I do have SPS/E, unquestionably it is temporal lobe related. Anyone hear of nasal congestion being associated with TLE?
I just got started on Lamictal, (added to the Keppra I have been on for over two years) but am on the starter dose of 50 MG/day as most of you might well know due to the rash risk, it has to be introduced slowly. So if I do have E, there is no way that I expect this dosage to be a therapeuetic level suppressing the SPS auras yet anyway, and well, two days in a row of getting an aura shows that.
