I had surgery last week (not related to epilepsy), and have been extremely nauseated. I've been throwing up most of my seizure meds since Thursday. The doc has tried all kinds of nausea medication, none seem to work well.

My neurologist says that it takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours for seizure meds to make it into the intestine to be metabolized. If it it thrown up before then than it hasn't much made it into my body. So if I throw it up before an hour and a half I've taken a second dose. I usually throw up the second dose, too. My main seizure medication (trileptal 1200mg, Lamictal 50mg) does not come in an injectible form. The lamictal does, but I'm not on a theraputic dose yet.

I'm feeling somewhat deydrated, and am considering a trip into the ER to get an IV of fluids. I'm trying to avoid it because you know what they're like once they get their paws on you.

I had four seizures yesterday. Am feeling a constant aura right now.

Advice on the meds?

I can't help you with the side-effects of the seizure meds, but maybe, to help ease your nausea, you can take ginger. I get terrible dizziness from my migraines, which, if I ignore for too long, spins out of control (no pun intended), and I end up vomitting before its all over. I found out about 5 years ago, that if I drink/eat a ginger-containing product, that it goes away within an hour. The dizziness completely clears up, my stomach no longer feels sick, and I can resume whatever activity I was doing before it hit.

I used to keep ginger ale in the house, for this reason only, but I have since found ginger root in capsules at my vitamin store and I gave that a try. The capsules contain 550 mg of ginger root. Fortunately I don't have these episodes too often, and I will probably be talking to my nfb practicioner about them after my son is done his treatments. The last one I had was 2 weeks ago and it was a doozy. I haven't had one like that in at least 10 years! The ginger ale actually didn't cut it (which has never happened in the 5 years since I've been doing it). I had just bought the ginger root and forgot to bring it with me. It got so bad I couldn't walk. My brain wasn't sending the right signals to my legs because I didn't feel my head spinning that badly to affect my walking, but it was major work just to put one foot in front of the other, and I was heavily leaning on my boyfriend's arm. Anyways, I took 1 ginger root capsule, and it went away within a couple of hours or so. Because it was so bad, I did take it easy for the rest of the night.

It might be worth trying, just to keep the nausea away and to keep you from vomitting.

I feel so sorry for you!! I hope that you start to feel better soon! A trip to the ER might not be a bad idea since you had surgery just a week ago. It might pay off in the long run if you go there now and spend a stupid amount of time, then it would be to wait and get stuck there for a couple of days! Let us know how you do!

Since you are basically vomiting every time you ingest something it sounds like, IMO call your MD immediately and see if Phenergran will be ok for you to take. You have to have a script for it I think. It is a fairly powerful anti-naseua med and can be taken in oral or suppository form (for obvious reasons!). Then after you get everything calmed down and hydrated, go with the more alternative treatments if you can.

A trip to the ER may still be in order due to what may be approaching severe dehydration? IMO, I would go ahead and suffer the trauma of the ER to get the IV for dehydration as well as the Phenergan or something like it to stop the vomiting? I have had food poisoining twice and it worked quickly both times for me....that has been years ago so they may have something even better. Sorry for all the misspellings and I hope you feel better soon!!!!

Hi, all. Better today. But stomach still iffy. I was taking phenergan, still nauseated. ick.

I tried the ginger and it helped.

today it just feels like there are big rocks moving around in my stomach, and everything smells nauseating. I also think I had a CP, which warrents another post.

Thanks for the support. I appreciate it so much.
