Can a 16yo have 2 seizures in his sleep but never have any after that?my son is now 30 his dilantin levels only 2.3 and been seizure free since those 2.

all they were is when i tried waking him i couldnt and his eyes were in back of his head and breathing was shallow.
he was also taking phenobarbital for sleep i dont know if maybe that played a roll
neither of these seizures were seen by a medical dr

one eeg was positive one was negative

family dr said he thought it was the phenobarbital that caused it
ER dr said epilepsy

seen a neuro this year and they said no EEG was needed
so no answers
all the old records were destroyed

or could this have been REM behavior confused with a seizure
maybe a deep sleep from the high dose of barbiturates and that could of spiked the eeg
when the eeg was given the barbitutes was not noted yet in his system

It would be unusual for phenobarbital to cause seizures -- it's actually the most commonly prescribed drug worldwide to control seizures, and seizures are not associated with an overdose of it.

Even though your son may have had two seizures, if they occurred in a single span of a few hours, it can be considered a single seizure. For that reason alone, it's worth questioning whether he truly has epilepsy. I think it's definitely worth considering a medication taper at this point -- if you and your son feel comfortable with that.
