Hi there! I'm new here and just got diagnosed. I'm a college freshman and am very healthy ant extremely active. I had no idea I would have simple partial seizures. They came out of no where, and I have no idea what triggers them. I tried to workout today but 10 min in my heart started to race and I had to stop. I had to lay down and had like 2 mini seizures. Anybody have problems working out? Did I get overheated or my heart rate got up too much to cause one? Also i'm exhausted all the time. My legs feel like bricks and I have no energy except to walk my dog. Is that normal for people with seizures? Everyday I wake up and have no energy. And I sometimes get nauseous after I eat. Sorry for so many questions but I am just trying to figure all this out, since I just got diagnosed. Thanks for any help or advice!

Hi Pirate18. I'm new here too. I have been having partial seizures for about 3 1/2 years but just found out about 2 weeks ago what they are.

My major complaint is the exhaustion. I guess that comes with the seizures. I have other symptoms, such as smelling things that aren't there and feeling a weakness in my left arm and leg that also is real. They are auras and part of the seizures. Do you have auras?

I just dropped my gym membership because I am soooooooo tired all the time.

Hi pirate18, welcome to CWE!

I have no idea what triggers them. I tried to workout today but 10 min in my heart started to race and I had to stop.
Well, that may be a hint -- sometimes exercise can be a secondary trigger, as well as associated stresses (dehydration, low blood sugar, food supplements/additives, fluorescent lights in the gym, etc...). For the most part, exercise is beneficial to people with epilepsy (see http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f23/epilepsy-exercise-7974/) but there may something particular related to the kind of exercise you are doing or the context in which you are doing it that may be stressful. It's a good idea to keep a detailed symptom diary -- it can help identify patterns or potential triggers, as well as track how you and your seizures react to any medications.

Are you taking any medication right now? If so, that might explain the exhaustion -- it's a common side effect. Another possibility is that you are experiencing poor quality sleep, either due to nocturnal seizure activity or other factors. Have you had a sleep study done? An overnight EEG might be helpful.

You might find the links below about exercise-induced epilepsy helpful:

Hi Pirate.

I was hit with partials out of the blue, too, back in high school. They can really change your life. It has been over ten years and I still don't know what causes them. They are controlled.

Are you taking any medicine that may be effecting you?

Hey there, new kid. Don't kick yourself over this. When I was still learning about my epilepsy, I signed up for a boot camp at my gym... in south Georgia... outdoors... in the summer. I had a seizure my first day. My dad (a doctor) told me that it isn't uncommon for people with epilepsy to have seizures from pushing themselves too hard physically. Yes, working out is a good idea, but just watch yourself. Make sure you are well rested befre you go and have eaten something. It might be a good idea to get a gym buddy who knows about your epilepsy and how to deal with your seizures, just in case. Let your doc know this happened, too.
