I'm trying to keep my cool. Really I am. Normal eeg...yay! No... it just means six freaking months of no license! This really screws up my life. And I would be ok with it if I really understood why. Everything points to a provoked seizure according to the doc. BUT... since I haven't had a second seizure meds don't make sense ( I'm fine with that!) But because of that, I have to be seizure free for 6 months instead of three if I were to go on meds. The ridiculous part of me is hoping for a seizure to get on with life more quickly. I know that's dumb. I have no idea how we will manage. There is no public transportation here. All you folks have explained well, that eegs are normal all the time when there are people having active seizures, so I get the risk. The only thing I didn't offer up was getting my potassium checked frequently, as in weekly. I'm so stressed over this... and I know that doesn't help. But what the heck, I can't even get my own kid to the doctor!!!!

A lot of different things can bring on a seizure. Drinking can bring on a seizure, stress can bring on a seizure a lot of things that have nothing to do with epilepsy cause seizures like diabetes, heart problems can cause seizures. There isn't always a reason for someone having a seizure either it can just happen it's called idiopathic (unknown cause)
I've had epilepsy for 50 years and I've survives not driving and you'll survive not driving iy you don't have another one for 6 months.
I do not drive and never have driven but I manage and so will you.

I don't drink. Have high blood pressure that is well controlled. No diabetes. Just a dumb stroke a few years ago. No idea why the medication I've been on for fifteen years suddenly messed up my potassium. I will manage... perhaps not quietly... but it will work out. Guess I'd better dig out the snow shoes.... I won't be driving until January!!! And what to do about the three day weeks I worked out for the rest of the summer so I could spend time doing day trips with the kids.... it's them I feel worst for. It's their lives that are altered the most. When I'm in less of a sour mood I will find a silver lining to grasp.

I've had E for over 30 years. I also have raise two children during those years. Both children witnessed many seizures during their upbringing and for most of those years I couldn't drive. Their dad was a pilot, so he was gone a good deal of time, plus we had no family in town. So in the summer, we did manage to find things to do, play ball, join swim teams, ask neighbors and friends from church for help with rides. Kids are resilient. Now they are both college educated, my daughter is married and my son made it thru law school, despite their "altered" childhood. It makes them strong, caring people. Plus I have Type 1 Diabetes. So you can do it, too. Your kids will be ok.

I'm sorry about you losing your license. You have only had 1 seizure? If so and you had my Doc, you would be on meds, he told me he puts EVERY pt with seizures, regardless of how many on meds and refuses to take them off. I will be finding a different doc as soon as I go through the gauntlet of testing yet again. Good news is this time (my 5th EEG) my EEG showed the possibility of the beginning of a seizure. Funny thing is that at that exact moment I was super relaxed and falling asleep. Anyway, I totally feel you on the no license thing, I'm dealing with it too. Good luck!

Don't know whereabouts you are wants2know but in the UK you don't lose your licence if you have a provoked seizure (as defined by the DVLA). Just been through this with my husband.

JaneC, I am in Maine. It would be three months if i agreed to or begged for meds. I will make the best of it. Its a nice little joke among my friends. Good thing i have a sense of humor. I havent figured out if its my doctor who will report this to the dmv or if im expected to self report?

Here are the rules for Maine: http://www.epilepsy.com/driving-laws/2008736

In Massachusetts, it's the honor system. Docs aren't required to report a seizure, and it's the individual's choice as to whether to self-report to the DMV. Regardless of the seizure's cause or whether you or not you are medicated, you are required to take a "vacation" from driving for six seizure-free months.
