Hi,
I've been struggling with weird spells that were passed off for the past 5 years as being due to anxiety. I would get these sudden bouts of panic and fear - I've never been a fearful person and never had panic attacks. These events would only happen at night, I'd wake up from sleep (usually within 2 hours of falling asleep) with a horrible sense of doom and my throat would feel like its tightening and I'd get a "whoosh" from my stomach up like I was in a crazy roller coaster.
Everyone said it was stress, but I didn't have any changes in my life. I was on antidepressants and it was still going on.
I saw this new neurologist and epilepsy specialist in Toms River, NJ - Dr. Mehta. He just started working there to build an epilepsy monitoring unit at Community Medical Center.
He asked all sorts of questions no one asked and I then was admitted to his unit for 5 days. During that time, I had one of my spells. Turns out, he was right and I've been having seizures from my temporal lobe all along. I got started on lamictal - started slowly but now for the past 2 months, I feel better than ever - NO MORE SPELLS and panic attacks - no more seizures!
This guy is really good - takes a lot of time to get me comfortable. I'm so happy that he's close by because the other neurologists I saw around here didn't know what to look for, Dr. Mehta really did.
Just want to give a shout out to kids and adults around me in Ocean and Monmouth county that if you need to see a guy who thinks outside the box and is a trained epilepsy specialist (he came from NYU epilepsy center), you definitely should see Dr. Amor Mehta. You won't regret it! No I just hope he stays here and doesn't leave Toms River.
