For the first time since I got diagnosed with E, I am having sinus/ear infection. Tried getting into family doc today with no luck. I think everyone in Dallas is sick. I thought my neuro said no over the counter cold/sinus meds...but maybe I made it up? I can't find anything about this topic. I am on Keppra XR. Does anyone know if I am ok to take something until I can get a doctor appointment???
 
Frankly,

I use Mucinex on a regular basis.

I have too, in order to attempt to keep my sinuses cleared--except when I do stupid things like what happened this past week.

My neurologist has no problems with my using the regular Mucinex on a daily basis. I do occasionally use the Mucinex D on an as needed basis......

Also, you may want to try a few drops of sweet oil in your ears.....
 
Stay away from antihistamines like Afrin. They tend to act as stimulants. Your best and safest bet would be to use a Neti pot or saline spray. Also, using steam to break up the congestion works fairly well. Maybe not as fast as over the counter pills and sprays, but definitely safer. :) Hope you feel better soon...

You could also try putting a dab of vicks under your nose...
 
I use my neti pot and saline spray, however if I absolutely need it to make it through the day I will take a Sudafed (the smallest dose, not Maximum Strength or All Day) with no problems. I make sure it's only before bed or once a day.
Vicks is great, it just makes me a little nauseous since my mother over did it when I was a kid.

My doctor has never said anything about no OTC meds, however, like Skllefer said, stay away from Afrin--anyone should.
 
Thanks for the info...I was able to get an appointment today with another doctor in the family clinic. My head is so cloudy, I just feel like I am on verge of seizing and afraid of doing anything to make it worse

Stay away from anything with antihistimine ~ it has a very bad reaction when mixed with most AEDs in your system such as internal bleeding.

I like Olive Leaf Extract. It boosts the immune system
 
the only thing my daughter will take is Benadryl OTC. Mostly because she is on Geodon for behavior and that med reacts to most antihistamines. She was on Periactin--it is a prescription med. It is an antihistamine but is used to help people gain weight. So if your doc wants to prescribe something for you, that is safe with meds. Lindsay takes 3 AED's one is keppra.
