Hey--
I just did a search for PANDAS and this came up. I wanted to see if anyone on this site ever had PANDAS.
A few weeks ago my son (absence seizures, autism) started talking about the same thing over and over and over excessively.
My older son had been ill with a fever, sore throat, lethargy for the first 3 days and then continued to have the fever, normal energy and stomach ache after eating. On the 9th day of the fever, he came down with a sinus infection and started on antibiotics (which he then got a major rash on his hands from the ceftin and we had to stop...ugh!).
A few days before son #1 got sick, my son with E started coughing...then the OCD started. No fever, no complaints of sore throat. He did not get a fever until about a week later. He had a fever for about 3 or 4 days. For a few hours it was up to almost 104 but he did not act that sick. He had several bloody nose episodes. A week later, the OCD continued and I spoke with his doctor that said possibly PANDAS. He was swabbed for strep and it was positive. The OCD went away quickly once the antibiotics were started.
Today I was checking out pandasnetwork.org . There is a wealth of information on this site about PANDAS if anyone is interested.
From what I read, he is going to need to be on antibiotics for an extended period of time (he is taking azithromycin now). If he gets strep again he will most likely have OCD as a symptom before ever showing that he is ill. I guess that is what happened this time, too. He had strep two times in one year about two years ago. Even at that time, I did not know he had strep until he came down with a full-body rash (scarlet fever). He did not indicate that his throat hurt but he did have a fever for a few days. I also noted that a few days before becoming ill, he seemed to have pain in his groin area after sitting. I am guessing it was swollen lymph nodes.
Oh, well...this is my experience with PANDAS.
This mama is tired after having one, then two, then one boy home from school for a period of two weeks. I'm exhausted from playing nurse!!!
In the future, I will look out for this "flip of the switch" OCD behavior, pain in lymph nodes and watch for high fever (even if it does not last very long).
