I lost my hearing, in both ears around the first of May. I finally got to see an ENT specialist yesterday. He basically told me that structurally, everything is fine. What I have is nerve damage. It could have been caused by my immune system overreacting to a virus. It caused swelling, which damaged the nerves to my ears. He put me on prednisone, then told my hubby that I have a 50% chance of getting my hearing back. If I don't respond to the prednisone, I won't be getting my hearing back. Also, he ordered an MRI, which my insurance company has yet to approve. So please keep me, my family, and my doctors in your thoughts and prayers. It was hard to see the expression on my hubby's face when he heard that I might not hear again. I laughed and told him that that means in the worst case, I get hearing aides. But still, I know that if he could fix this, he would...and that it hurts him to know that he can't..... In the meantime, I'm back to work. :) So keep my classes in your thoughts as well.

Wow.

((((((Skillefer))))))

That really sucks. I will definitely keep you in my thoughts. I really hope the prednisone works.

So sorry Skillefer!....

I will be keeping you in my thoughts!

This happened to my sister-in-laws brother, and he was able to get an implant that now allows him to understand most of what is being said to him. Like a bionic ear I guess.

Yes Robinn. I believe that's what's called a Cochlear Implant. It works for some people, and not so well for others. The doctor has to rule out several things first....like metabolic problems. That's why he ordered the complete blood workup.....and why he ordered the MRI.. Worst case scenario it might be leukemia or a stroke. Best case scenario, it corrects itself with the help of the prednisone...or at least is correctable with a hearing aide. :)

You know what I miss the most Speber? conversations......and music. :) The thought of not hearing Bolero....or the group Celtic Thunder....or SoCa music ....is really sad. :(

LOL....it's music from Trinidad and Tobago. :) My hubby and I love to dance to it. :)

The prayers have already been there Skilly and they will keep on coming.

Stay strong and let your faith kick in.

We're wishing you the best Skillefer.

Hey Skillefer!
I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. You are in my thoughts in prayers. I will keep praying. God Bless!

That sounds so scary Skillefer! Not just the hearing loss, but not knowing why. I hope the doctors can figure it out and that it will work out well for you. I'm praying both for you and your doctors.

It ain't over til it's over!.....

Probably why he ordered the blood work Robinn. I glanced at it and noticed he's checking EVERYTHING....... :) And I doubt it's the hypothyroidism.....I've lost 14 lbs. in the last month....and that's not even trying. If anything, it might be some of the medications I'm on. Levothyroxine can be an ototoxin. As can several seizure medicines, tylenol, ibuprofen, OTC medicines.....So it may be that the ototoxicity of my thyroid medicine, OTC allergy medicine, and tylenol all converged at the one time when my immune system was working overtime, and my body reacted. ....Ah well. Friday, I get to go get an MRI to make sure that it's not being caused by a stroke or tumor. Then the 23rd, I get to go talk to the ENT again. It's the 3rd day of my prednisone, and the last day of the highest dosage. I don't see any improvements. So I'll be weaned off the prednisone.. for the next 9 days....Hopefully it works. If not, hearing aids here I come. :)

Good luck skillefer!.....we're all rootin' for you!........

:woot:

I sure hope you get some good news!
