My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! Hopefully they will be able to find something to help. I am sure it must be frustrating(to say the least) and frightening. Do you think a neurologist would have any suggestions since it may be nerve realted? just a thought. I actually just learned my brother has lost his hearing..but he is really scared to go to the Dr. I am glad you are checking into it and I will pray they find some answers and help for you!!

Hugs!!
Michelle : )

Thanks Michelle! Actually, the ENT has ordered a copy of the MRI to be sent to my neurologist as well as the bloodwork...which is way cool. At least I know they'll be talking to each other... :)

You guys have been so supportive and fantastic. :) Thank you so much. It really means alot to me to know that I have your support. Losing the hearing was a little frightening....I'll be honest. But, hearing isn't everything. I still have a husband who adores me, a family that loves me, friends that support me, my faith that sustains me, my life and the ability to appreciate everything that I have and beauty in the everyday world. So whatever happens, I know that I'll come through it just fine. And, as I tell my hubby, if I do end up with hearing aids, it'll make it easier to avoid disagreements...all I'll have to do is turn off the machine. :) Anyway...today is the MRI. I think it's the first one I've ever had, so it should be an interesting experience. :) And again, thank you all! :)

Skillefer, any new news on the hearing front? I've been thinkin' bout ya. :?:

Hi Lynn! No news yet. I get to see the ENT today. I talked to my primary care physician yesterday. He ordered a whole bunch of thyroid level tests (more than usual) as well as phenobarb level check. Today I go over the MRI and bloodwork with the ENT. I'm pretty sure I know what he's going to say. But, I can hope. :) I do know that my hearing tends to be worst first thing in the morning. But I think that's because at night everything is so quiet. Anyway, I won't be online this weekend. So I'll let all of you know exactly what the doc says on Monday. :) And for all of you that have been praying and thinking about me....THANK YOU!!! I am hearing a little better....not at the level I'd like to be hearing at...but at least people can be more than 5 inches away from me in order for me to hear them. :) Now they can be about a foot away. :) That's progress. (Personally, I think that's due to the Niacin.....I'm sure that the doc would probably disagree. )

I don't know how I missed this post; but
(((((( hugs )))))))

I know what it's like to have hearing loss,
even worse, progressive hearing loss, as
a result of nerve damage; and even worse
having all of your hearing wiped out instantly
and becoming profoundly deaf!

You bet your booties my prayers and thoughts
abides and A LOT OF IT! I do not want
you to undergo or experience it, been through
it all ----> let's hope and pray it was all temporary!

Well, good news...I think. :) I had an appt. with the ENT last week. He took a look at the blood work, and the MRI results, as well as asking me questions. He said that the hearing loss is due to my immune system basically being hyperactive, and that he noticed an improvement in my hearing. There is...but it's small. He said to get my hearing tested in one month, and then go back and see him. HE was actually pleased with the improvement in my hearing and said it was a matter of just being patient. I asked about prescriptions...he said to just keep taking the vitamins that I was taking. He did NOT prescribe me anything. :) No tumors on the MRI....just a cyst and a stuffy nose, which are normal and have no impact on the hearing nerve. So..hubby went and got me a personal amplifier to use at school so I can hear kids questions. :) The only down side.....while I was taking the prednisone, I caught my mother-in-laws cold. :( As I told my hubby, I'll laugh if this thing starts with a cold and ends with a cold. :) Anyway, to all who have been praying for me....thank you!!

Wow...that is great news. We will all be praying that everything keeps improving for you! Hope the cold gets better too! If the Dr. was pleased, go with that and stay positive and let all the prayers do their work!! : ))

Hugs!
Michelle

I'm glad things sound encouraging. No nerve damage, right?!?! I'll keep my fingers crossed for your continued improvement.

No nerve damage. It's autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss. The doc figures that I came in contact with a virus, and that my immune system was already stressed (my hubby had just gotten over strep B, which amazingly I didn't catch...and my allergies had flared up) so my immune system went into hyperdrive. I've been researching it....there's about a 47-63% chance I'll get my hearing back. Depends on the study you read. :) But I've noticed that my hearing is better after I take the Niacin...probably because it's a vasodiolater....so I've been taking 1000 mg of Niacin spread throughout the day. It makes sure that blood is getting to the cells in the inner ear.

Hope you are feeling good! I am still praying for you and hoping all goes well for you. I am actually going to mention your info. to my sister-n-law. I mentioned my brother's hearing loss..and alot of what your said rang a bell. Thank you for the info. I am hoping he will figure it out as well.

Take care!!

Thank you Michelle! Actually, I've also had a cold this week. You know, the kind that wakes you up hacking and coughing up guck. Well, last night, I actually managed to only wake up twice. :) And so far today, I've only coughed 2 times. So I am officially on the mend. I'm also hearing a little bit more today. My hubby had bought me a personal amplifier at the store...but I really don't like using it that much. Today, I was able to actually hear my boss (not completely clearly, but I could hear him) when he was sitting about 2 feet away. Much better than last week, when I couldn't hear him at all. So I think I'm getting better as far as the hearing is concerned too.

So glad to hear you are feeling somewhat better! Keep up the good work. Those colds can really stink. It flips me out and then it gets worse. I absolutely can't stand when I can't breathe.I had a horrible one last yr. wheezing, coughing you name it. I ended up having to cancel my hysterectomy and reschedule it. At any rate, So glad you are doing well!! Drink lots of hot tea and honey..helps the cough and I find it so soothing.
Take care! :))))

How are you feeling now? Hope all's well with you
and things are improving!

We will keep praying for you. You won't need your hearing to feel that support and soon your regular hearing will be back as well.

I think it is amazing how well you are still working. I don't know how well I would function at first.

LOL....well, Buckeye, since I'm a special ed. teacher, I'm lucky to have an aide in the class. She's been my ears for me. :) Actually, there's only one thing that I miss, and that's being able to hear my husband's voice. Everything else I can deal with. But not being able to hear my husband is hard. Yes, even when he's whining because he's not feeling good. :)

As for the MRI, actually, I wasn't nervous at all. I just knew, deep inside, that it was going to come back fine. I think my husband was more nervous than I was.

And as for my hearing, well, yesterday I thought I was doing better. I was actually able to hear my boss when he was sitting about 3 feet away from me. Not clearly, but I could make out enough words to get the gist of what he was saying. :) So that's an improvement. Last week, he would have had to have said what he was saying about 3-5 inches from my ear. :) So yes...I guess I'm doing better. :) Thanks to all of your prayers and good wishes.

Awww, I'm sorry

I just now saw this, and I hope things are getting better for you.

I'll be thinking of you.....

Loss of hearing

:brain::e::e::einstein:

skillefer,
I can kind understand what you are going through. W hen I was born I holes in my ears because of birth defects and I couldn't hear out of my left ear and my right ear i could barely hear. So we saw an ENT also and he tried an experimental surgery in the early '80s . What he did was take skin graphs from behind my ears and covered the holes in my ear drum. This was a lot better than having ear infections the rest of life. Now I only get get ear infections very rarely and now I can hear alot better. But I do hear better than before!
P. S. will be praying everyday!!!
