Any of you guys been on Prozac, and if so, what effect did it have on your seizures, if any?

I was reading a Mom's story about her litle girl who had a tumor on hypothalamus, and she had surgery, which gave seizure freedom for 2 years, but because they didn't quite get the whole tumor, she had a relapse of seizures, and also severe depression and aggression. So, she was eventually put on prozac, which really helped the psychological problems, but also reduced the seizures significantly. (unfortunately, the little girl ultimately died)

Then, today, I just read that Seratonin is an anti-convulsant, and also aides with proper sleep cycles (which helps epilepsy), and I believe that Prozac somehow enhances Seratonin levels.

It's an interesting idea, though as with any of the brain meds there can be side effects and interactions. In animal studies, Prozac seems to have an anti-convulsant effect, but in humans the results are mixed. You'd think that Eli Lilly would be jumping all over the potential for another use for their med, so it makes you wonder...

The supplement 5-HTP (the precursor of seratonin), which plays a similar role, can also have an anticonvulsant effect, but as with Prozac, it hasn't been well-studied (and probably never will be since you can't make that much money off of it).

I do think that whenever you start messing with serotonin levels you have to be very careful.

I have absolutely no interest in adding in another med. He's already on 3 AEDs plus thyroid meds, and that's enough to deal with.

But just curious...

Because some many with epilepsy also have depression, I'm assuming that Prozac may have been prescribed, so just wondering if there was any increase or decrease in seizures after taking Prozac

Hi I'm on prozac I don't think it has done anything for or against my seizures at present anyway. I've been on it 2 months. But my epilespy has been gone through a recent change itself (for the worse) but that was before I was put on the prozac. So I guess in my case it's hard to gage if it has done anything.

I was put on Prozac last year, but because I'm on Dilantin, it causes Dilantin levels to rise. I had to come off. Dr. tried several other meds. on me and I couldn't handle them for one reason or another.

I how have Prozac compounded and it works great for me.

I am on prozac. have been for a few years. Just started keppra this past may. I started the prozac for anxiety (probably related to my first seizure 5 years ago). I don't think it messes with my keppra and i don't have any noticeable side effects.

I have been on Prozac for about a year. I also take Trileptal and Gabapentin. The Prozac is for depression which is working very well. I've had no lasting side effects.

Did you see any increase or decrease in seizures after taking Prozac?
