My daughter is ten years old and is not diagnosed with E but earlier this year she collapsed and passed out whilst running and I took her to the hospital. She was monitored overnight and had an EEG and ECG to check her heart and brain as well as other blood and urine tests. Everything came out clear and it was attributed to the exercise (and my husband and I did agree on that too). Anyway, on Monday night I had to take her to the hospital again because I gave her and her sister a headlice treatment. I washed her younger sister's hair out but thought Alannah would be fine to wash her own. She was in the shower and I heard her screaming thinking she had fallen but she hadn't. She had actually accidently swallowed some of the headlice treatment as it ran off her head. She had her mouth opened and swallowed as she thought she had rinsed all the treatment of her hair and was trying to drink the water. The screaming was because her throat was burning from inside and she had pains in her chest. She tried to rinse out her mouth and spit whatever she could up but I decided to take her to the hospital. Whilst we waited at the hospital she was having jerking movements much like hypnic jerks - she was tired but her eyes were open and I called one of the nurses to explain what was happening. She checked all her vitals again and she was okay. So, i'm wondering if it is tiredness, stress or something else I should be worried about?

I think your daughter was having a short-term reaction to mild pesticide poisoning (anti-lice shampoos are essentially pesticides). Muscle twitches are among the symptoms that pesticide exposure can cause. Keep an eye on her over the next few days just to be on the safe side, but she should be fine. Hope you both can relax, and be healthy and lice-free.

I agree with Nakamova. The pesticides in the lice treatment are central nervous system toxins (probably acetylcholine mimics or reuptake inhibitors, which would explain the jerking symptoms). Bugs have basically the same nervous systems and neurotransmitters that we do. Fortunately, she shouldn't suffer any lasting consequences from the single, brief exposure. Hope she's feeling better!

Because of past experience, I agree that it was reaction to the pesticides. I would try to protect her from pesticides in the future. I had a toxic exposure to pesticides & now if I walk into a building that has been sprayed I start shaking uncontrollably.

Thanks for the responses - i'll take her to the local doctor today for a checkup as per the suggestion of the hospital doc.
Loopeyloo, is your reaction that you have now to anything been sprayed an anxiety response. I just ask because obviously having that kind of exposure to pesticides would usually cause a level of concern or worry of it happening again.
