Hi all--Has anyone taken the progesterone-only mini pill? Had any good or bad experiences with respect to seizures? I was recommend to go on it because of frequent periods, and periods = nighttime myoclonic seizures every time (mid and pre). I asked this newby neurologist I was force to see until I land on a new permanent doc, and she said it was fine--but she was so green she knew less about a lot of stuff that many of CwE folks know, so I have to ask for second opinions here :-) Google says it can be contraindicated when taking AEDs--but a 'yay' vote from OBG nurse practitioner and fledgling neuro. Any thoughts appreciated. ~Lindsay

My daughter who very learning problems went on mini pill over twenty years ago.back to back no periods and roughly same time e got better alto no evidence that was why.She also had pulmonary embolism but period and social reason out weight the the physical side

Any time, It all could coincidence but they did give it to a lot of the girls but not for e and many of the girls were better for it but like my daughter it was childhood e and that proberly got better anyway this applied to most of the girls..The stress of menstration on these girls was awful

I tried progesterone cream a while ago but it didn't do much of anything one way or the other.
:dontknow:

My girl has been taking Microlut 30mcg (mini pill ) and Microgynon 50 tablet once daily, no drama with the Trileptal, no breakthroughs and not heavy bleeds.
However, it does not remove the discomfort of like bloating, head ache which I suspect she has by her behaviour.
Tegretrol was a nightmare as it interfered with the pill effectiveness. :(

Sometimes it can involve trialling out the various types of mini pill and pill, there is heaps to choose.
A gynaecologist is great to discuss options.

I've been applying progesterone cream for the past four weeks and it's been amazing! I've gone from one seizure a week to nil. I now know I've got catamenial epilepsy and it's very frustrating that not one neurologist ever mentioned that hormones could play a role in epilepsy. Even my skin has cleared up alot - I use to have bad escema but since taking progesterone it's imroved alot.

Hi Lindsay,
I found the pill to be stronger than the cream and it worked great reducing my sz. I was to take it 5 days before my monthly cycle and I was really surprised how well it worked. I did use the natural progesterone cream first and that was pretty good. Another thing I found out that helps sometimes is eating almonds or lightly salted nuts because they have progesterone in them. After I found this out I just started eating almonds and that worked just as good as the pill. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue

Almonds and nuts do not contain progesterone, they are high in B vitamins and magnesium, both of which are needed for the bodies natural production of progesterone. Nuts also contain protein which is needed to produce hormones.

If you are deficient in B vitamins and or magnesium almonds and nuts are an excellent source, and if you are not allergic, nuts are just darn good food.

Hi Lindsay,
If you use the natural progesterone cream it has yams in it and that will increase the level of progesterone in your body, whatever you do stay away from soy milk or anything with soy in it because that can reverse what progesterone does for you in regards to stopping the sz. Also Frink is correct the nuts increase the amount of progesterone in the body. Have a good day and May God Bless You!

Don't the indigenous Indians of rain forests use it for contraception also sweet potatoes do same thing natures hrt

OK I'm going to start this pill and I'll let everyone know if it helps. I'm always so reluctant to change anything in case it makes things worse, but I'll give it a go!

Before I had epilepsy I was on the pill, not sure if it's the same you are going to take. I went on the pill because I was having irregular periods, PMS and cramps. Even when I was taking it all of these things were still happening so my gyno suggested the shot, Depo-Provera, so I wouldn't have a period at all. This worked great.

Even after I was diagnosed with epilepsy both my neuro and gyno said it was ok to stay on it. I didn't have any periods or seizures while I was.
