it would seem that all I do on this site is ask questions well that seems to be the way my life goes. walking around asking questions.

now onto why I started this thread, I have been though google, webmd and I still don't have an answer to this TOUGH question. I understand that we are not doctors But I have been wondering since april of last year........

Are people with seizure disorders at a higher risk of stroke then those without? my mother had a stroke april of last year and another one in march of this year(she was in a nursing home for a week). And what about sleep apnea?

Maybe more information is need for more responses. How old is your mother? Health history? Medications she is taking? These could all be factors. Seizures I don't believe will normally cause a stroke. Who's to say a stroke may cause a seizures though. They just had a recall on lipitor having glass in it and so much glass that it would cause bleeding in the stomache and wrong dosages. There is just so much of a gray area to say if having E could put someone at a higher risk.

gray area, gray matter.......The brain is so tricky that I don't think anyone can tell us anything for sure. It is so different with each person. What may be a big risk to one won't have an effect on another. Good questions though

this may help, I had an brain aneurysm (stroke so to speak) which triggered my simple partial/complex seizures. I don't know the answer to that question and my guess is neither do dr's. I know that they are working on it. I have been told that I had an annie for many reasons but nothing concrete ( I'd like to avoid the next one ya know what I mean) so it leaves me in limbo. The more I read on webmed, wikkipedi? etc... the more anxious I get. I've been talking more with dr's and they have been calming my fears and answering my questions. I suggest you ask the doctors. If you deside to ask them, please, pretty please, be sure to post their response. I'm dying to see if great minds trully think alike!

Does cerebro/cardiovascular disease run in your family? Do you or did your mother smoke? As LW629 said, a stroke could cause a seizure. My father had a stroke years ago and he also smoked for over 50 years. But his mother and two of his sisters also had strokes.

Briefly, no. But if the particular cause of the seizure disorder is related to a brain bleed or similar cardio-vascular issue, then the seizures and stroke might be co-occurring, due to the same underlying cause.

And what about sleep apnea?

There does seem to be a link between sleep apnea and seizures. One school of thought is that the apnea-related loss of oxygen can trigger the seizures. And that the resulting fatigue from poor quality of sleep can also trigger seizures. It's not clear though whether the apnea is a seizure trigger only in those who already have a lowered seizure threshold. You might want to check out these links:

thank you for your help, I will look at the links with my mom later today. She does smoke, she had seizures way before the stroke.... She was 19 when the seizures started.

we're not sure how long shes had sleep apnea the doctors didn't look into that until the stroke, but my gawd she snores so badly...... my sister and I call our parents "the dueling snorers" ...... dads been tested and he doesn't have sleep apnea.
