Update!

So when I saw my neurologist and neuropsychiatrist last month, the neuro referred me to a vestibular physio for my dizziness, who I will see on Monday.

I told the neuropsych that the 20mg of anti-depressants (Lexapro) was making me feel lousy, and I still wasn't convinced of his theory that I have a low lying depressive disorder that may be causing my suspected "psychogenic" seizures (didn't show up on EEG but abnormal brain activity did). He agreed to a trial reduction of the tablets, on the understanding that if they are helping, it would be a fair assumption to say that the seizures will return as I lower the dose. I was so pleased that he was prepared to let me try this. I am now on 5mg and although the withdrawal process has messed me around, I am pleased to say that the prevalence and intensity of my seizure symptoms has not worsened or improved, since reducing the dose. However I do feel better now that I'm not taking medication that doesn't seem necessary.

I'm now trying a naturopath. I don't know much about natural medicine, and I know that it has its critics, but as i'm sure you guys will understand I'm willing to give anything a go, especially as Western medicine appears to be failing me. Miserably.

So the naturopath looked into my eyes, nails and mouth, and suggested I have poor circulation to my brain, digestive issues and possibly a misplaced atlas (neck vertebrae). She asked loads of questions, really listened to me, and said she wanted to do some research on my symptoms (muscle tremours, metallic taste, muscle weakness, facial numbness, loss of speech/movement, smokey smell, confirmed history of childhood epilepsy, left temporal lobe abnormalities in adulthood, headaches, sharp and painful auras etc). She has researched the homeopathic solutions to these symptoms, and when she's finished, will give me a script for a custom made homeopath remedy that will be made in a pharmacy. She said that it can do no harm, and is relatively inexpensive.

She also suggested I try eating according to a blood type diet, and she wants to start me on a 3 month digestion program which she firmly believes will rid the toxins/lack of nutrients problem that affects my brain as well as the rest of my body. Something about my stomach not producing the correct enzymes, which then affects the glutamate levels in the brain. Its commonly known as a "leaky gut". She seemed confident she could help, so I'm going to do some research and give it a go. She comes highly recommended through a friend. Any thoughts or feedback? Cheers xxx

Hey, congrats! that is so great! I am jealous. Naturopaths are more comprehensive , in my experience. But here in Hell, oops did i say purgatory ? I meant the U.S. you have to pay big bucks out of pocket for that kind of treatment. I commend you for trying another approach. It can't hurt and why not? Best of luck and hope to hear it went well.

Thanks Janus. She cost me $90 Australian, which is expensive, but so is being constantly unwell and tired! I guess if it works, it will save me money on "clutching at straws" things like "the next big thing" multivitamins, painkillers, doctors appointments etc! lol

Glad to hear you are being listened to and that you are finding your own way to wellness!! I hope the naturopath works wonders for you!!

Hi Wobblez,

Good luck with the lower dose of Lexapro & good to see the naturopath was able to help.
Was it $90 because it was the 1st visit or will it always be that amount?
I'm assuming none of the appt is covered by Medicare either.

When I was working for a chiropractor the initial consultation was usually a little more expensive as it took longer because that was when he would go through the patients history & he would do xrays. After the 1st visit it was a little cheaper.

Good luck with the blood group diet, I'm pretty sure one of my brothers & his wife have been on a blood group diet for years & he swears by it.

Hi CQ:),

Follow up appointments will be $60. The homeopathic remedies should only be about $40 all up, but the gut program will be $130 a month, and take 3 months. I really don't know what to think at the moment. The more research I do, the more confused I get. Sorry, just feeling a bit "over it" today. I'm trying to study but the usual headache is just driving me insane.

Check this out everyone, the naturopath recommended this too.. www.atlasprofilax.com

Let us know how it goes.. I've been curious about naturopaths myself. Of course, the neuro thinks its all hooey, but then sometimes I think he wouldn't know anything if it wasn't pre-printed in some pharma pamphlet..

Lol, will do Dignan. I've noticed the neurologists assume it's something neurological, the psychs assume its psychological, the naturopaths insist its diet related, and the physio's assume its back/neck related! Does your head in!!

Wobblez, sounds so true! Each specialist swears he knows what it must be. And they bill you to say that. Who knows? it may be any one of those 'causes' they speak of. Or none at all. It's hard to put faith in any one, single viewpoint.

Thank you Woblez for your info. I am definitely not satisfied seeing an epileptologist. All he can suggest is to put me on anti-seizure medication with numerous side effects. I firmly believe in searching for the reason--not treating the symptoms. Medicare will only pay for treating--not prevention. I feel this is so wrong!

Mary1 - totally understand where you are coming from. I love how the psych's say "is there anything bothering you lately?" Ummm...how about this crap!!! Fix this and I'll be good!!

I hope the naturopath can help. I think there can definitely be value in having someone look at the "whole picture" when treating something that can have many contributing factors. And I think the right diet can play a huge role in improving overall health and helping to treat specific disorders like epilepsy. That said, the blood type diet is... bunk. :(

ditto Nakamova. thank you. I had a naturopathic doc tell me years ago that that bloodtype diet is not founded. I believe you need to cross reference your material when researching because there is lots of bad info out there. And still, i am the first to criticize the AMA.

Thanks Nak, I had my suspicions, but the blood type diet website did provide both critiques and scientific backing for the diet, which I thought was very good. I hadn't delved into it yet, but after reading this article, I am even less convinced of the theory.
