Hi Everyone,

New to the forums, great information on here, I have a question.

My father has had epilepsy most of his life,
It took a few years but our GP eventually got his dosage and combination of medication right and his seizures were brought under control.
So he has been seizure free for almost 8 years.... that is until today....

I'm in shock, now he has been taken to the ER and is currently being checked and tested etc..
And I'm wondering can something like fumes from painting trigger a seizure like this?
He was painting for a couple of hours, came in feeling unwell and feeling a bit strange then had a seizure.

The last time he had a seizure which would have been about 7-8 yrs ago, was because he forgot to take his medication,
So am curious would something like this trigger it?

Thanks in advance,
marcus

i hope your fathers doing better now , and hopefully this was a one time thing . I'm not sure about the paint fumes , i've never heard that one before ( but there were alot of things i hadnt heard of relating to epilepsy before i came here , so hopefully someone can give you better advice ) but from me welcome to CWE and thoughts are with you and your father

With a lower seizure threshold, your father could be more sensitive to paint fumes than other folks might be. And sometimes poor breathing can trigger a seizure -- perhaps your father was breathing less well because of the paint fumes. Was he otherwise healthy -- drinking enough water, eating properly, etc?

Alot of things that triger my seizrues are stress, if I get depressed about something, get tired or if I do alot of work and over exert myself.

How hard was he working? He could have been pushing it and worked himself into a seizure. Not sure if he does alot of strenious work on a regular basis but I know something like that would possibly trigger a siezure for me.

Just out of curiousity,if you cant avoid a seizure trigger, such as being overheated or in bright sunlight no matter what you do--have any of you all noticed an increase in your seizures despite your meds or do your meds hold them even with the triggers? Just kind of a which came first question--I just notice a lot of sensory and irritability and confusion issues when the temp goes above 85 despite staying in air conditioning. With the kids, you still have to go outside and things just seem funny and strange

is this the first time he has inhaled paint fumes for that long of a peroid? plus, heavy breathing does lower your seizure threshold. because i know during an EEG they have me breath heavy steadily for about a minute or so. as for me personally i don't know much about triggers because i don't really have any. the only thing that has ever lowered my seizure threshold has been head trauma from a car accident.
