Does anyone get very hungry after a seizure.

The reason I ask is I've recently noticed that when I wake up from a small seizure (ie waking up while myoclonic jerking is happening) I'm always starving, and my hunger is to strong to ignore.

This has even happened a few times where I ate before bed, but in general if I eat just before bed its because I skipped at least on meal earlier.

What I'm trying to figure out if its hunger causing seizures or seizures causing hunger.

Answer: YES!

Yes I do!

Depending on what type of seizure it was;
if it was a moderate to major seizure (not a
mild one) - I'm starving and thirsty! It's like
I hadn't eaten or drunk for 2-3-7-10 days!
All the while yet, if I ate and drank, it's not
very much - weird, huh?

If I have back-to-back seizures, you can be
assured, I'm going to be one hungry and
thirsty critter here after when I come out of
it (postictal)! I can almost "swear" these "E's"
burns up calories! It's too weird for my taste,
I mean, it's around 4 AM, and I've had seizure(s)
in the middle of the night (nocturnal); and coming
out of it - with a headache, I'm thirsty and starved,
and have the need to eat and drink, but even just
a nibble of this and a sip of that, I end up going
back off to "la la land", and here's the worse part;
I don't remember it!

I've left bread, meat, mayo, food, drink, etc - on
the counter or my son's heard me (or when I was
married, my ex heard me - and before I was married
my parents would hear me raid the 'fridge in the
middle of the night), and then I get "snapped at"
for leaving all this stuff laying around and I would
be absolutely confused, because I would wake up
in the morning feeling like I've been beaten up by
a gang with baseball bats or clobbered by them.
That's about as much as knowledge I had - unless
they caught me and/or witnessed it (the seizures
and the whole danged 'fireworks').

Even when I've been in the Hospital, I've had to
be fed and given something to drink - because of
seizures.

Epilepsy does do weird things ...

Uh, YES!

I'm STARVING afterwards......and that's after I've slept, too. I usually sleep for 18 to 24 hours after I've had one of my t/c's. And then, I TRY to eat....but I CAN'T because I've bitten all the way through my tongue....

I usually end up dropping 20 pounds after a seizure.....and I'm a cranky witch, too, cuz I'm HUNGRY for quite a while til I can actually EAT.

But, you also brought up the point about eating possibly causing the seizures. This IS possible. I do know of someone who has this problem. It is called reflex epilepsy. He eats, and has a seizure almost 6 hours to the dot later.

Good luck,

Meetz

Dogtor J discusses this and he relates it to the glutamate and aspartate in the system. He has seen it in his animals and is able to resolve it by putting them on a gluten free, casein free diet.

You know,

I hadn't asked him if he'd tried that diet or not.........no idea why it hadn't occurred to me.....DUH. *SIGH* I'll PM him........but he's in Texas, too, so it'll be a while before I hear back from him...
