I have been on dilantin for 33 yrs and one major side effect that I've noticed is ~ shrinkage of the Cerebellum. When I lose my balance and fall to the ground, I find it hard to get up or if I want to get down on my knees, I can only go down about half way and then I have to let myself fall the rest of the way, then I find it hard to get up (Cerebellum controls motor functions).

I find that exersising helps a lot.

This is also why my balance and gait are getting worse.
Anybody else experiencing the same type of problems?

Randy

My balance and gait are bad also and I've tried many different meds over the years, so it's probably the combination of meds and the # of years you've been taking them that is causing the problems.

Sorry you are going through this off balance stuff. I also have MS and know what you mean. BUT learned when I went to a specilized nutritionist that MEDS for example or other chemicals cause inflammation on the brain which in turn makes us off balance.

I went through a gentle detox..identified allergens or toxins in my systems..and he then built UP my depleted systems and whalla..the balance improved 100% along with more energy

His treatment is called NRT/ART or nutritional response testing.. using the autnomic system. Its amazing!! His appt not expensive..and he ONLY give you what your body/brain need in whole food supplements ONLY in the dose YOUR body tells him you need...again..phenomenal!!

Think about seeking this out. Many chiropractors are also trained in ART/NRT
I was lucky to have both a nutritionist and a chiropractor.

When I went to my doctor one time he sent to the hospital for a CAT scan. Everything was normal thankfully. He said the only abnormality he could find was a shrinking of my cerebellum. Does this make me stagger like a drunk &fall down & cause my my hand - eye coordination make it almost impossible to write? Also is there anything I can do to reverse the shrinkage or at-least retard its shrinkage? I am no longer on dilantin. I am now on:

Tegretol x 800 mg
Pheniebarbitol. x 64.8 mg
Lamotrgen x 700 mg

If anybody has an answer to these question PLEASE let me know. Thank you in advance.
