my son is almost 28, with intractable epilepsy. we've researched and tried major university medical centers from west to east coast. i have been researching gastric epilepsy. my son often has seizures right before, during or after elimination. since the seizures - generalized atypical absence or tonic clonic - occur around the time of his medication dose (which he takes every eight hours - combo of tegretol/keppra/felbamate- i thought his seizure activity was due to low blood levels. i have had rheumatoid arthritis since a teenager and often felt that resistant epilepsy was somehow an autoimmune problem. i took minocycline for years and did well. this medication is now in research for autism. my son developed autistic qualities after being diagnosed with epilepsy at age 8 with no apparent reason for onset. at age 10 to 13 when he had uncontrollable seizures/status which caused brain injury and a "cognitively normal" child became severely impaired. now looking again at the GAPS diet - high oils, natural fats, meats, no refined products, no soy. this is my first entry on any epilepsy forum.

Hi llinnah, welcome to CWE!

At least for some folks there does seem to be a dietary link to their seizures, and diet has been used for seizure control with some success. You might be interested in this link: http://www.atkinsforseizures.com/

Welcome llinnah - it is basically the nutritional goal that I strive for with my daughter.
Many "diets" are saying close to the same thing, and yet I don't like the word "diet".
It is a nutritional plan, and is what the body needs for energy.

hi i am actually diong the gaps diet for my daughter who is 26.The thery is if someone has damaged gut flora, which i beleive my daughter does ,then certain foods that are not digested properly seep through the gut wall and create toxins which can cause reactions like seizures.i am reading the book by dr. natashsa mcbride "the gut and psycology syndrome" pretty interesting. So far i have not seen good results but its only in early stages.

Hi naomi, welcome to CWE!

Please keep us posted on how you're daughter does on the diet. Hope it ends up helping.

It took my daughter quite a while to see positive results. Though it was slow and steady improvement.

Hi All, I just wanted to let you know that you can find others trying diets for epilepsy on a FB group called "Diets for Epilepsy". Diets such as GARD and GAPS are mentioned and used by some people in the group. Just wanted to let you know, in case it will help you/your child on your/their journey to wellness. :-)

Thanks! It's always good to have another resource.
