Hi all,
My dad just had a 3rd episode of seizure few days ago. We had previously went to a neurologist to do EEG,cardio and blood test two years back and the results were okay. Few days ago he had a CT scan and results were okay as well. Following are what happens during each episode. Each seizure lasts more than 30 minutes.
During the recent seizure he had a random walking motion and resist being touched or held by people around him trying to stop him from walking into danger. Also during the seizure he seems to be talking about something emotional about his parents and was constantly saying sorry(out of context). He woke up immediately after splashing water onto his face and there were no confusion once he wakes up.

It looks like some stress are causing the seizure. Possible?
I am confused whether to look for another neurologist or psychiatrist as I have been researching online psychological can trigger seizure-like symptom as well.
Appreciate if anyone can help. Thanks.

I'm no doctor, but to me it sounds like seizure up until the part where splashing water on the face interrupts the event and there is full cognitive function afterward. That's not typical of seizure activity as I know it.

But yes, stress is a common trigger for seizure activity.

How old is your father? The symptoms you describe could be an early warning sign of dementia.

Hi krazysky,

Welcome to CWE! I've had all the testing done that you mentioned and the problem was the damage was to deep in my brain for any tests to show until I had a wada test done and a video e.e.g. where the electrodes were put directly on my brain.

I agree with Nakamova it could be dementia I've had to deal with that with my family and this is one of the signs.

Ask your dad if he has a headache or feels tired after the possible seizure. Also when he's walking around and possibly in a seizure take note if he's smacking his lips or pulling at his clothing if he is then he may be having a complex partial seizure. Stress and lack of sleep are the two main things that can trigger seizures. Keep track of all this and write down on a calendar what time of day or night the possible seizure happened and write a description of the seizure. By doing this when the neuro takes a look at the time and date they may see a pattern in the seizures as to what time they happen or what days of the month. I wish you and your dad the best of luck and May God Bless the Both of You!

My father is 58 years old now. It seems like for every episode it started happening with a sitting motion. He felt dizzy and right after he sits down he could not remember anything that happened there after until water splash and he regained conciousness. Could this be some other issues that cause sudden lack of oxygen to brain? Thus causing similar symptoms as described above? Thanks.

I have a VNS, vagus nerve stimulation. In short it works like a pace maker to the brain to help stop seizures. If I feel a seizure coming on there's a magnet that I use to help stop the seizure. If I'm having a seizure then someone can use the magnet on me to bring me out of the seizure faster. Either way the seizure has to stop on it's own though, even if the magnet is used before or during it. No one can do anything like splashing water on my face will, or has ever, brought me out of a seizure.

Stress is a huge seizure trigger for me. If things stressful are going on I'm almost guaranteed to have a seizure. Caffeine can be a seizure trigger too. Does your father drink a lot of coffee or sodas?

Did you talk to his PCP about what's going on and he send you to a neuro or did you go to one on your own? Do all the things that Porkette said and make sure you write down how long it lasts, 30 min is a long time to be having a seizure. See his PCP, or see him again, and you'll have a detailed list of things to tell him instead of just guessing or trying to remember if he asks. Doing this will help him have a better idea of what's going on and then he might have a better idea of what type of dr he would need see.

That sounds more like a cardiovascular issue such as Vasovagal Syncope or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Has he had full cardiac work-up with a tilt-table test?

No but that's good info. Thanks!

Thanks guys! We decided to visit another neuro with better details prepared now. Hopefully can find out the cause. Thanks again guys!
