Hi all.

I have had 3 seizures over the course of about 18 months. Tomorrow I will be having my EEG, so I don't know if epilepsy is the cause.

Something odd happened last night, I woke up and my teeth were chattering. I wasn't cold or anything like that. I am depressed at the moment though, as I am concerned about my health and my marriage is full of problems too.

Has anyone ever exerienced this? And if so, have you been told whether or not it is related to seizures?

Hi, i am sorry to hear about the tough time you are having, i hope you can resolve some of your issues soon and feel much better.

As for teeth chattering i did experience this after my first seizure (grand mal). I was so anxious and scared after my first seizure that i found it hard to sleep and would wake up every couple of hours all night long. I had never felt so anxious in my life and must have experienced my first panic or anxiety attack. I would wake up with my teeth chattering, but unlike what you are experiencing i would also be very sweaty and cold, i was also extremely scared.

At the time i thought this would be seizure related but i am 100% certain these were anxiety attack as i have not experienced another since i have come to terms with my epilepsy and am no longer anxious. I did go to A&E after one of these events and was told it was more anxiety related than seizure related.

Hope this help - again i am a newbie so please understand i am still learning about epilepsy so i hope some of the more knowledgeable members can give you a more definitive answer.

Hi Vanessa,

If you weren't shivering or chilled at the time, then the chattering could have a neurological origin. Were your jaw muscles contracting and relaxing spontaneously? Were you able to stop it? If so, did it start up again? I hope it's a one-time thing -- perhaps stress-related as Mins suggests -- but it's worth making a note of and letting your neurologist know.

Sometimes when I have a seizure my teeth will chatter and my lips will smack. When I'm having a seizure like this I'm usually blanked out so I don't know that I'm doing it but my husband told me that I do.

Thank you all for your responses. I was asleep, and I was dreaming and my teeth were chattering while I was dreaming. When I woke up they were still chattering and stopped, I don't remember anything about the jaw.

My teeth don't chatter per say, but my bottom teeth/lower jaw clench 'upwards' 24/7, as if being pulled upwards by a magnet. My upper jaw and teeth are fine...no downward 'pull' whatsoever. Some days it's worse than others, but it's always there to some degree.

I mentioned this to my neurologist. She doesn't believe this is connected in any way to my seizures, but I don't believe her since this lower teeth 'pulling' and clenching didn't begin until these seizures kicked in. It honestly feels like a magnet located somewhere above my lower teeth is constantly and relentlessly drawing them upwards. My bottom teeth are visibly sawed straight across from this relentless clenching too.

My teeth chatter also. It is a lot better now.

I notice when I get still, this is another one of my NEW things. I'm thinking this is related to the B-12 & folic acid defic.
I say this because, if I go and take some B-12 complex drop or eat a food rich in folic acid --it stops.
