If you simple partial seizures and have taken Keppra in the past. besides Lamictal what other anti seizure meds have you tried to control your partials.

What was the outcome?

Would you recommend it over the Keppra?

I've been on trileptal, keppra, lamictal and dilantin. I'm still on the last three.

For me I think dilantin works best for my simple partials... but who knows it's a crap shoot. I do know that my lamictal counter balance my keppra rage, so that's good.

Anyways my vote is good old fashion dilantin. That sh_t is still around for a reason... because it works!
 
hmmm, may have to step in here P. it does work for many however there are issues with being on it long-term as well, same as tegretol. b/c they are so old they are said to have a harder effect on your body (who knows what they were doing in the 50's right).
i've read a number of posts and articles in which people would like to get off it.
Pita what else have you tried besides kepp and lamictal? topamax maybe?

Since the beginning I was on Dilantin first but didnt control complex partials then Depakote same story then came Tegretol. some control on both together then surgery. after surgery Tegretol and phenobarb. Lets face it I've been on every old medication you can think of and some you probably cant. Since the start of these partials focal what ever you want to call them I've only been on the Lamictal and Keppra. Currently on both and still no control. This is the purpose of this post Last Tuesday I tried to take my life by taking a lot of pills. ended up in the hospital for 2 days. I blame the Keppra. Its been well noted that I've been fighting the depression for a while. The anti depressant I am on now was doing a good job and never had a suicidal thought untill March this year when I started the Keppra. April I spent 5 days in the psych ward. Then came last Tuesday. I see the epileptolgist in August and I going to ask him to take me off the Keppra. That's why I'm looking for input by those of you have been dealing with simple partials
 
waaaa??? you did? omg hun i had no idea. can you simply talk with your gp about tapering off the keppra now? sounds like you're sure it's the keppra that did it, best not to wait a couple more months? we are in control, not them, we talk about that all the time, if your gp will help you taper maybe don't wait.
(((HUGS))) love, please keep us posted. and yeah as i said, topamax is prescribed alot for partials. it worked well for me, of course until it didn't, but i had a good run ;)
 
I just don't feel its the Lamictal as I've been on it before and had no issues. I see the neuro-psych Thursday at that time I will tell her what I think. she is smart enough to put 2 and 2 together. She is in the same office as the epileptolgist and stay in contact on my case. I think with her help he will agree to back me off the Keppra then August look at something else. and ultimately I do have the final decision.

I hear you Q. The side effects are a concern but my grandfather was on Dilantin for 50+ years and he never suffered any. I'm hoping the same goes for me. A lot of the new drugs have not been around long enough to see if there are any long term side effects. If it works then I'm happy.

I saw then neuro psych yesterday. She thought it could be the Keppra but wasn't going to change any of my seizure meds as that was not her place. She was however going to talk with the epileptolgist about what happened. My appointment with him is in August. I am calling his nurse today to see if that can be moved up so we can discuss this issue. The psych is worried about me being alone this weekend as my son went out of town this weekend. I have plenty planned to keep me busy.

Excellent idea -- If you are really anxious to switch, they should find a way to accommodate you so you can do it sooner rather than later.
 
I just got through to the nurse. she going to talk to the Dr then call me back. Now the waiting game begins :)
 
Of course no call from the doctor or nurse yesterday. I'm sure he was gone early. Keep my fingers crossed for a call on Monday!
 
No But you better believe I'll be calling tomorrow. What worries me now is he's on vacation for the 4th holiday.

For me, the combo medications that work PERFECT are Keppra and Carbatrol. I started taking the Keppra and Carbatrol when I was 17/18 years old. I had great control! I was on those two up til March 2011 when I was taken off both for the VEEG. I was put back on the Keppra because I didn't have a HUGE seizure. But then started to have simple partial seizures, and my neuro said no, he wasn't going to add on the Carbatrol again. So I had to get a second opinion, who didn't agree with the first neuro, and started back on the Carbatrol since I had such great control, and started off a low dose... 200mgs morning/ 200mgs at night. WORKS PERFECTLY! :) Ive been taking those two combos now since March of this year and its been great! No seizures since then!
 
Hey the eplileptolgist said he could see me. A week from today. I had to call the nurse And she says "oh yes that's right he left me a note last week saying he could work me in as soon as possible." As soon as possible is next Tuesday. If I didn't like this doctor and been with the practice since my seizures first started I'd start looking for another doctor!
 
So you have a week to sweat it out? I hope you hang in there till then.
