I'm still living in a temporary situation. I'm working 6:15-9:45 AM, but it's not enough to cover expenses. I just applied for food stamps and assistance. I'm going to apply for disability again.

On the other side of things, I started playing in the local community concert band.

And, while I was more or less bedridden last spring, I watched a BBC documentary on Beauty, by Richard Scruton. Here:

I looked him up, and found out he's starting a masters program in Philosophy in London, and they are offering full tuition scholarships. It almost looked made for me, so I applied. I didn't hear from them, and neglected to follow up. I figured there was no way I would be accepted. I emailed them last week and I found out I had been accepted. They sent the letter to my old address, so I didn't get it. School already started, so they offered me a place next year. I don't know if I'll get a scholarship. I'm going to try to crowd fund it. (Remember I was accepted at two other schools and couldn't go.). I had sworn school off, but I had nothing to loose.

I know, like I need a degree in Philosophy. At any rate, whether I go or not, it will give me something to shoot for.

Make sure to ask if the scholarship might also be used to cover housing. If not, then the university may offer very subsidized housing as it is common for students to not have a whole lot of money. This might be the time to apply for a part time job at the university to help cover any additional expenses. As you know, a degree in Philosophy is not likely in itself going to lead directly to a degree but who knows what may come from the experience. Could be a great opportunity for you!

Congratulations Matthew! I hope things work out so that you can pursue the masters degree next year.

That's excellent news. I'm not too sure about the prospects of a degree in Philosophy, but if you're lucky you might find a job in academia? I'm sure with some creativity and a bit of luck you'll come across something.

That's exactly how I managed to get a doctorate without any debt. I was taking classes on one side of campus and teaching on the other side in the MBA program. Makes for an easy commute when you can just walk across campus from your classrooms to your job.

I am so happy for you. This is a terrific opportunity. :)

Sounds like you have some new doors opening. The college environment can just be kind of uplifting. Hit up those books and make Aristotle proud!

It's good to keep an active mind Matthew. I wish I had something like that to look forward to. I hope it works out for you.
