So, after talking with my neuro last night, I asked him about the swollen lymph nodes on my neck area and under my arms. He said that if it was an allergic reaction, it would be a rash that comes first. But he said to be sure, to make an appointment with my primary care dr.
So, today I go in to see my primary care dr. She does a test in the back of my throat to see if I have an infection, like strep throat, etc. Comes back negative. She asks about my medications. I told her all about the medication changes Ive had since March. She looked at my neck area and said its inflamed very badly and she could see a golf ball sized lymph node on the right side of my neck sticking out! Before checking the throat tests, she said it was probably an infection and she would prescribe me some antibiotics. She leaves the room to check the results and comes back saying they were all negative. She leaves the room again and after about five minutes, she comes back in saying she looked up Lamictal and it says that if any swelling of the lymph nodes, or swelling of the face, mouth etc comes visible, to get off the medication immediately. I told her what my neuro said about if it was an allergic reaction it had to be a rash. She rolled her eyes and said what she found said any of the listed side effects listed, which said rash, swollen lymph nodes, etc to contact your dr immediately! She said with all my tests being negative and increasing my dose on wednesday and it getting worse as the days went by, its because Im allergic to the medication. She said to call my neuro at once and tell them of this. But she also took blood too, she wanted to see what came about with that. But she said she was 99% sure it was the medication. Due to my severe swelling, she said it will take longer, around a week for the swelling and tenderness to go away and feel back to normal.
So, Im leaving the drs office, and I called the hospital to have them page my neuro. I had to let him know what the dr said, he said to contact them when I found out what they had said.
So I get ahold of him and tell him what the primary care dr said. He said that he doesnt think thats the case at all. With all the allergic reactions he has seen, its always been a rash. Not the swollen lymph nodes. But like stated by my pharmacist and primary care dr, not all patients get the rash, others can get the other listed side effects and still be allergic to the medication.
He then goes on to tell me that the whole reason why he put me on the lamictal was because I dont have epilepsy, but anxiety attacks! Now back in March when he released me from the VEEG, he said that day that I had epilepsy, which showed the spikes on the EEG, but just not enough to cause a grand mal seizures, which in his opinion I outgrew and was left with simple partial seizures. So because he still saw epilepsy, he said in his opinion I dont need to be on 2 medications, but left me on Keppra.
Now I go alittle less than 2 weeks on the keppra and start having seizures. Thats when he added the vimpat. I had depression and mood swings with that. I got taken off that. Now when he put me on Lamictal he said that it was to treat seizures.
Today, he tells me its used mostly to treat anxiety! But it can be used to treat seizures as an add on medication. But the main reason he put me on that was because I have been having anxiety attacks, not seizures. Thats why he was weaning me off the keppra and keeping me on the Lamictal becuase he said I have anxiety! And the psych dr he had his nurse set up for May 9th, that was also a medication he wanted me to have to treat the anxiety attacks he claims I had during the VEEG.
I asked him if being taken off cold turkey off medications can cause different seizures? Ive done research and found articals saying that. But he claims that its not possible to have a different type of seizure being taken off cold turkey. He said if I had epilepsy, I would have had a grand mal seizure.
I really dont know what to think! And to top that off.... He said to quit lamictal even though he doesnt think Im having an allergic reaction, and said to continue to take the Keppra! Why take Keppra when he claims I dont have epilepsy? It just doesnt make sense! And he said he was going to be out of town this weekend.... and if anything other than the anxiety attacks came about, I had to go to the ER at once.
So he wants me to take 1250mgs twice a day of the keppra, for a total of 2500mgs. Now when I was on the Keppra at 3000mgs only, by itself with no other medications, I went for less than 5 days and had seizures. Thats why he put me on the lamictal. How on earth am I going to do it with 2500mgs of Keppra only?
I really think I need to get a second opinion!
